Conflicting claims of Newcastle still set to land Joe Willock and then move for Boubacar Kamara
Tuesday night is awash with media speculation on the future of Joe Willock.
The 21 year old midfielder who made spectacular headlines late last season, scoring in all of Newcastle’s final seven games, breaking Premier League records along the way.
The Arsenal loan player becoming the youngest ever Premier League player to score in six games, then seven.
Tonight brought news from France, where RMC Sport stated that Joe Willock was in talks with Monaco, ahead of a potential summer transfer.
The Ligue 1 club buoyed by a third place finish last season which brings Champions League cash to help finance signings, plus of course being able to offer Champions League football can help attract those signings.
However, swiftly following on from those RMC claims in France, we then were hit with a rival report / claim from The Mail.
The English newspaper carrying the following report / claims:
‘Newcastle are increasingly hopeful of signing Joe Willock on another season loan from Arsenal.
Steve Bruce has been pushing for an answer from the 21-year-old and Newcastle expect to know within the next 48 hours.
Should the move get the go-ahead, they are also hoping to move for Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.’
Who to believe, if anybody?!!
Obviously a lot of media in England has been claiming that Newcastle have been pushing Arsenal for an update on what the situation is with Joe Willock and the only difference here is, that The Mail have put a time expectation on it, claiming there should be some clarity by Thursday. How exactly they would have information that Newcastle expect to know within 48 hours is anybody’s guess.
I’m also not convinced by the line where The Mail claim: ‘Should the [Joe Willock] move get the go-ahead, they are also hoping to move for Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.’
They don’t even mention why the Boubacar Kamara transfer would be dependent on Joe Willock happening first. Kamara is a defensive midfielder and Willock an attacking one, two positions Newcastle desperately need to strengthen so why wouldn’t they want Kamara regardless?
For background, like Joe Willock, Boubacar Kamara is also aged 21, the French midfielder only three months younger than the Arsenal player.
He started 35 Ligue 1 games last season and helped Marseille finish fifth in the table, however, with only one year left on his contract, the French club are looking to sell him. Previous reports have claimed Marseille are holding out for around £25m for Boubacar Kamara but this report from The Mail says that Newcastle believe they can get him for around £12m.
Whilst Joe Willock would be expected to add goals to this Newcastle team, with Kamara there would be far lower expectations on that front. In 96 Ligue 1 appearances so far, Boubacar Kamara has only scored two goals and got five assists. Usually used as a defensive holding midfielder, Kamara can also play as a central defender.
With transfer reports / stories you pay your money and take your choice on what to believe.
However, with only two and a half weeks until the Premier League season kicks off (a week and a half until Ligue 1 does!) and Arsenal making a series of high profile signings, including in midfield, you surely have to think that Arsenal will be looking to sell Joe Willock after his value was bumped up by those goals for Newcastle, the Gunners needing to offset at least some of their spending by selling some existing players.
