The Newcastle United players will get their first taste of friendly action this afternoon.

After two weeks of pre-season preparations so far, the first team squad travel to York.

Former NUFC star Steve Watson manages York City, the club currently in the National League North which is the sixth tier of English football.

Not the smoothest of pre-season preparations so far, with the Euros, injury and Covid impacting.

A total of at least eight Newcastle United players from the first team squad set to miss today’s 2pm kick-off at York.

Martin Dubravka – A foot injury is set to see him miss the start of the season, the number one keeper reported to have broken a metatarsal.

Elliot Anderson – The Mail report that an ongoing hip problem means that the young midfielder is having to rest for four weeks to try and sort the issue.

Fabian Schar, Miguel Almiron, Emil Krafth – All three given extended leave due to their international commitments this summer, with Almiron also recovering from a hamstring injury picked up in the Copa America.

Karl Darlow – Saturday brought news from the club that the keeper has tested positive for Covid and will have to self isolate for ten days, ruling him out of the first three, probably four friendlies.

Freddie Woodman, Mark Gillespie – As close contacts of Darlow, the two keepers having to also self isolate for ten days.

(Today was set to see the first team squad cut in half to play the two games and be supplemented by Under 23s but not wanting to mix the two dressing rooms after Darlow’s covid positive, Harrogate will face the NUFC Under 23s and York play the first team)

Four more Newcastle United players are also doubts for today’s game.

Jonjo Shelvey, Matty Longstaff, Ciaran Clark and Sean Longstaff had all been absent from Newcastle’s opening fortnight of pre-season until all four showed up late this week. No confirmation by the club but media reports had said a number of Newcastle United players had been self isolating.

Whether any or all of the quartet will be deemed fit enough to take part in today’s kick about remains to be seen, but as for the first team playing squad that should definitely be available, these are the 16 that have featured regularly in pre-season training images released by the club this past fortnight:

Goalkeepers –

Centre Backs – Florian Lejuene, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez, Paul Dummett

Full Backs / Wing Backs – Jamal Lewis, Jacob Murphy, Javier Manquillo, Matt Ritchie

Midfield – Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick

Attack – Ryan Fraser, Dwight Gayle, Yoshinori Muto, Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton, Callum Wilson

Newcastle United have confirmed that today’s match at York will see 16 year old Max Thompson and 20 year old Dan Langley stepping up to be the two goalkeepers in the matchday squad.

Joe Willock of course also missing from the NUFC squad that ended the season. Mike Ashley refusing to allow any offer to buy the goalscoring midfielder though talk of a possible second loan deal. Which sounds a little dubious as if Arsenal are prepared to let him go, plenty of other clubs would be willing to pay the asking price.

Willock came on midway through the second half on Saturday afternoon, as Arsenal drew 2-2 at Rangers. They have travelled back down south and the Gunners fly out to Florida on Wednesday, with all eyes on whether Joe Willock is amongst the Arsenal squad that travels.
