2 Newcastle United players make this England COVID replacement squad for Euro 2020

Which Newcastle United players could / should have been included in Euro 2020?

Well that argument has been and gone, England not doing too badly without them, preparing for the semi-final against Denmark tonight.

However, an interesting question posed by one of the journalists at The Athletic.

Following news of the England cricket team having to pick an entire new squad to play Pakistan, due to a virus outbreak, Andy Jones of The Athletic posing the question of what would happen if this also occurred with the England men’s football team…

The journalist looking at who he would be picking in England’s 26-man COVID-19 replacement squad for Euro 2020…

Goalkeepers: Alex McCarthy (Southampton), Karl Darlow (Newcastle United) and Joe Hart (Tottenham Hotspur)

Defenders: Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United), Tariq Lamptey (Brighton), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan), Ben Godfrey (Everton), Michael Keane (Everton), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), James Tarkowski (Burnley), Matt Targett (Aston Villa) and Aaron Cresswell (West Ham)

Midfielders: James Ward-Prowse (Southampton), Ashley Westwood (Burnley), Joe Willock (Arsenal), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), James Maddison (Leicester)

Forwards: Patrick Bamford (Leeds), Danny Ings (Southampton), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Emile Smith Rowe (Arsenal), Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea), Jack Harrison (Leeds), Dwight McNeil (Burnley).

England COVID-19 Reserve Squad starting XI (4-3-3)

McCarthy; Wan-Bissaka, Godfrey, Keane, Targett; Ward-Prowse, Willock, Lingard; Hudson-Odoi, Harrison, Watkins

A great debate / argument provoking article and once again, this piece shows just an embarrassment of riches Gareth Southgate has at his disposal in this era. Maybe not a lot of real World Class players BUT such strength in depth of proper quality players, who will hopefully be enough to win the Euros.

Two Newcastle United players chosen for the man from The Athletic’s 26 man replacement squad and one of those making the actual replacement starting 11.

Andy Jones explaining his choice of Newcastle United players:

‘Darlow, meanwhile, finished the season as second choice at Newcastle behind Martin Dubravka but his form earlier in the season had thrown his name into the hat for a call-up.’

‘How about a Lingard dance celebration after a 90th-minute winner or Willock continuing to look like the best goalscorer Newcastle have had since Alan Shearer? You get the picture.’

Yes I know he has Joe Willock listed as an Arsenal player BUT quite obviously, Willock is listed because of what he has done at Newcastle United, not anything he has shown so far with the Gunners.

I’m guessing like me, most of you would have also found a place in this replacement England squad for Callum Wilson, though whilst I am of course biased, I couldn’t honestly include anybody else, whether you are shouting Lascelles, Hayden, Shelvey, or whoever…
