Newcastle United young stars lose out at Premier League Academy Awards ceremony

It was the Premier League Academy Awards ceremony on Wednesday night.

Two young Newcastle United stars had been shortlisted for an award.

Midfielder Nathan Carlyon on the shortlist for the Under 18 Premier League goal of the season award, having scored from his own half against Leeds at the start of the (2020/21) season.

Carlyon’s stunning effort from his own half came just moments after Leeds had gone 2-1 up with four minutes remaining.

The youngster collected possession from kick-off before taking a look up and sending a sensational shot straight over the visitors’ backtracking goalkeeper all the way from the centre circle, earning Neil Winskill’s side a point in the process.

Also up for an award last night was 20 year old goalkeeper Dan Langley, for a stunning save he made away at Stoke in a 2-1 defeat on 19 April 2021.

A Premier League Football Development panel compiled the shortlists after nominations from club coaches, with a vote on the winners set taking place at Wednesday’s Premier League Academy Awards ceremony.

Premier League Academy Awards nominations and winners:

Under 18 goal of the season:

Nathan Carlyon, NEWCASTLE v Leeds, 19 September 2020

Joseph Snowdon, LEEDS v Sunderland, 24 November 2020

Jude Soonsup-Bell, CHELSEA v Norwich, 23 October 2020

Diamond Edwards, SOUTHAMPTON v Leicester, 17 October 2020

WINNER: Mateusz Musialowski (pictured above, top), Newcastle v LIVERPOOL, 13 March 2021

Under 23 save of the season:

Jakub Stolarczyk, Spurs v LEICESTER, 30 November 2020

Dan Langley, Stoke v NEWCASTLE, 19 April 2021

Arthur Okonkwo, ARSENAL v Brighton, 22 January 2021

Daniel Barden, NORWICH v West Brom, 30 April 2021

WINNER: Zach Hemming, Burnley v MIDDLESBROUGH, 22 February 2021

Unlucky for the two Newcastle United players but good to see their nominations, typical that in the Under 18 goal category, Nathan Carlyon lost out to a goal that NUFC conceded!
