Newcastle United in talks with Liverpool to arrange match in August
A report on Wednesday has revealed that Newcastle United could be travelling to Liverpool for a match in early August.
The Liverpool Echo (see below) say that talks have been held with both Aston Villa and Newcastle, for a game at Anfield pre-season with Liverpool.
The scousers are said to want pre-season friendly opposition that they don’t play until well into the season.
Newcastle United don’t travel to Liverpool until the midweek of Wednesday 15 December 2021, then the return game at St James Park on the weekend of Saturday 30 April.
Newcastle United’s pre-season looks like this so far:
Sunday 18 July – Newcastle United away to York City for a 2pm kick-off.
Sunday 18 July – NUFC cutting their squad in half this day and also playing at Harrogate Town, The home side say a 2pm kick-off but no confirmation from Newcastle.
Tuesday 27 July – Newcastle United away at League One Rotherham, kick-off at 7pm.
Friday 30 July – NUFC friendly away at League One Burton Albion, with a 7.45pm kick off.
Liverpool Echo report:
‘Liverpool are lining up an Anfield friendly against Aston Villa or Newcastle United as part of their pre-season preparations.
The Reds are keen to face top-level opposition before the Premier League season starts on August 14 with a trip to promoted Norwich City.
Talks had been held with Spanish side Osasuna over a match at Anfield but challenges regarding an overseas team being allowed into England at present scotched any such proposal.
Liverpool have instead investigated arranging at least one fixture against a Premier League side ahead of the new campaign.
And they are now hopeful of hosting Villa or Newcastle in early August as the culmination of their warm-up programme.
Liverpool were keen to avoid facing any Premier League team they are due to play during the early stages of the season, and with fixtures against Villa and Newcastle not scheduled until December, they are considered ideal opposition.’
