Newcastle United countdown – Only 11 days until it all starts again

Fair to say that Euro 2020 has been a pretty good diversion to our Newcastle United concerns.

Well it has for me anyway.

The strange format of only eight teams going out at the group stage and four of the third placed teams still going through, ironically helping to make the tournament more exciting and a big success so far.

What about Newcastle United though?

Well, the Euros have been a handy distraction for Mike Ashley and his minions.

The Euro 2020 matches meaning that the focus has been shifted well away from what is happening at St James Park, or rather what isn’t happening.

As the clock now starts to count down ever quicker for Newcastle United countdown, this is where the landmarks are that are coming up:

11 days until the Newcastle United first team squad return for pre-season preparations (Monday 5 July)

16 days the 2021 summer transfer window has now been open and no sign of any action from Newcastle

16 days until the 2021 Copa America ends with the final in Brazil on Saturday 10 July

17 days until Euro 2020 ends with the final at Wembley on Sunday 11 July

24 days until the first pre-season friendlies, a split Newcastle squad playing away at York and Harrogate (2pm kick-offs on Sunday 18 July)

52 days until the Premier League kicks off again for Newcastle, home to West Ham at 2pm Sunday 15 August

58 days until the first PL away game against Aston Villa – 3pm Saturday 21 August

65 days until the third PL match of the season, home to Southampton – 3pm Saturday 28 August

67 days until first international break of the 2021/22 season starts (Monday 30 August)

68 days until the summer transfer window closes (Tuesday 31 August)

It feels a bit bizarre that we are only a week and a half away from the Newcastle United first team squad arriving back to start pre-season and only three weeks until NUFC play their first pre-season friendlies.

You hope that frantic work is going on behind the scenes to ensure Newcastle United are prepared for the challenges ahead BUT I have this horrible feeling that NUFC is the last thing on the minds of Ashley, Bruce and Charnley as the 2021/22 season rushes ever closer.
