Keith Gillespie believes Steve Bruce can take Newcastle United top six in 2021/22 season if…
Some interesting claims from Keith Gillespie about Newcastle United and Steve Bruce.
The former Newcastle winger talking about what could be possible in the upcoming Premier League season.
The season kicking off in only eight weeks time and the Newcastle United squad back to start pre-season in only 16 days time (Monday 5 July).
Keith Gillespie thinks Newcastle United could go top six.
The winger believing this is possible for Newcastle if Mike Ashley gives Steve Bruce ‘the right amount of money’ to spend in the transfer market.
Keith Gillespie using the example of West Ham, with David Moyes leading the Hammers to sixth this past (2020/21) season.
It has been a constant theme of the coverage of Newcastle United under Steve Bruce, for his mates in football and the media to make out as though he has been starved of funds for players, as an excuse for the negative poor football he serves up most of the time.
Keith Gillespie though should surely know better.
In the four transfer windows whilst Steve Bruce has been at Newcastle United, Mike Ashley has allowed him a net spend of over £100m on players, over the course of his six transfer windows at NUFC – Rafa Benitez actually made Ashley a profit on transfers in and out.
Going back to Steve Bruce, whilst he has been allowed net spending of over £100m, in the same four transfer windows West Ham have had a net spend of £66m (stats via transfermarkt).
The bottom line is that at Everton, David Moyes in his eleven seasons finished top six on five occasions and only twice in 11 years finished lower than eighth. Compare that to Steve Bruce, in his entire management career Bruce has NEVER even finished top nine in the Premier League, any season at any club.
Just how much money would Steve Bruce need to spend for him to even manage top nine with Newcastle United? Never mind top six.
Keith Gillespie also quotes the examples of Aston Villa and Leeds.
Steve Bruce could never have got those results and those levels performance and excitement from the same players, that Bielsa has.
Whilst obviously Villa were where Steve Bruce was sacked part way through season because of the shambles under him, Dean Smith came in and with the same players turned it around and got them promoted that same season!
When talking about money, having a really good…or really bad, manager, can be priceless, or so so costly.
Keith Gillespie speaking to Football FanCast:
“I do think Steve Bruce will be there next season but I hope he gets given the right amount of money in the transfer market to go and strengthen the squad and go and possibly do what the likes of West Ham have done.
“Look at Aston Villa, look at Leeds, go and improve, don’t just be happy with being mediocre and surviving, go and improve on that.”
