Independent 2020/21 season ratings on all 26 Newcastle United players

There were 26 Newcastle United players who started Premier League matches in 2020/21.

A season that was shorter than usual due to the interrupted 2019/20 season causing 2020/21 to kick off late, though it certainly didn’t seem short in any way to me!

So who were your winners and losers, which Newcastle United players did you rate or not?

Always interesting to get an outside perspective and these season ratings for all 26 Newcastle United players (who started at least one Premier League match in 2020/21) come from WhoScored.

The whoscored ratings use data from every single Premier League match, over 200 raw statistics included in the automated calculation of a player’s rating, weighted according to their influence within the game.

Every event of importance is taken into account, with a positive or negative effect on ratings weighted in relation to its area on the pitch and its outcome.

Now whoscored have published season ratings for all Newcastle United players (in brackets the number of PL games each player started) in Premier League matches in the 2020/21 season, from top to bottom…:

7.13 Joe Willock (11)

7.12 Allan Saint-Maximin (19)

6.84 Martin Dúbravka (13)

6.84 Callum Wilson (23)

6.80 Jonjo Shelvey (29)

6.79 Karl Darlow (25)

6.75 Joelinton (23)

6.67 Isaac Hayden (22)

6.66 Paul Dummett (14)

6.66 Jacob Murphy (17)

6.66 Miguel Almirón (28)

6.64 Ciaran Clark (21)

6.64 Federico Fernández (24)

6.64 Matt Ritchie (15)

6.60 Jamaal Lascelles (19)

6.47 Emil Krafth (14)

6.39 Fabian Schär (13)

6.38 Ryan Fraser (9)

6.37 Javier Manquillo (10)

6.36 Sean Longstaff (15)

6.35 DeAndre Yedlin (5)

6.34 Jamal Lewis (20)

6.33 Jeff Hendrick (17)

6.31 Andy Carroll (4)

6.29 Matthew Longstaff (4)

6.21 Dwight Gayle (4)

I think that the whoscored top four would match the top four of pretty much every Newcastle fan, though some fans no doubt having the four in a different order. Those four of course being 7.13 Joe Willock (11), 7.12 Allan Saint-Maximin, 6.84 Martin Dúbravka and 6.84 Callum Wilson (23).

Maybe a surprise for many supporters to see Jonjo Shelvey as high as fifth and Joelinton in seventh.

Though I would guess for a lot of NUFC fans, you have those four at the top who clearly were / are the best, then you basically have the rest, with not a lot to choose between them.

At the bottom end of things, if you put to one side the three at the very bottom with only four starts each, you then have 6.34 Jamal Lewis and 6.33 Jeff Hendrick at the very wrong end of the ratings, which I think is pretty fair comment.

Overall, it has to be a massive worry when your club hasn’t bought a single player yet this transfer window and your top rated played was only on loan….
