This convinced me that Mike Ashley is not really much worse than many others

It was great to see the passion released by the attempted introduction of the European Super League proposal.

As a lifelong Newcastle fan (71), I have played in and around the ground as a schoolboy, played in local leagues for many years.

Later, I travelled from Oxford every other week to watch the toon, watching the London games and travelling across Europe was a delight.

So, in essence, I welcome and support the stance of everyone who stood against the European Super League and especially the Premier League traitors.

However, it forced me to reflect on the game I have loved all my life.

I handed in my season ticket when Mike Ashley wanted to charge the same £900 quid to watch Championship football.

I have been one of his biggest critics and although I love my team, I won’t give him the satisfaction of taking any more of my hard earned cash.

There lies the issue for toon fans.

The only way Mike Ashley will sell Newcastle United is:

If someone gives him what he wants or…

He can’t generate the same earnings / benefits from the club.

The greed that was highlighted by this attempted European Super League is prevalent throughout the game, owners (not just the six), players, agents and the TV networks.

I realise there were other issues at play but “greed” was at the heart of it.

So, I have convinced myself that Mike Ashley is not really much worse than many others.

He has no affinity with the club or its supporters, just the same as others.

He is dishonest and devious, as are some of the others.

He has spent more money than others, albeit not many.

His focus is on making money, not providing a base for long-term success.

I have therefore reached the conclusion, that Newcastle fans should be careful what they wish for.

What they really need is someone with really deep pockets who wants the club as a vanity project, not a business.
