A couple hours later on Friday afternoon and now Newcastle United have confirmed a second award of the day for Steve Bruce.

A panel that includes Bruce’s former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, has awarded the NUFC Head Coach the LMA (League Managers Association) performance of the week for the 4-2 win at Leicester.

Newcastle United Official Announcement – 14 May 2021:

‘Steve Bruce has won the LMA Performance of the Week award – in association with Sky Sports Soccer Saturday – for Newcastle United’s excellent 4-2 win at Leicester City.

Goals from Joe Willock, Paul Dummett and a Callum Wilson brace gave the Magpies all three points at the King Power Stadium, with Bruce admitting that it was arguably his side’s best display of the season.

The recipient of the award is decided by the League Managers Association’s panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett, Barry Fry Paul Ince and Rachel Yankey. The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,500 competitive matches in professional football.

Bruce will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and an LMA Performance of the Week trophy.

He was also named as the Premier League’s Barclays Manager of the Month for April earlier on Friday.

The Newcastle United head coach guided his team to eight points from their four matches as the Magpies went unbeaten and took a huge step towards securing top-flight safety, which was eventually achieved this month.’

Premier League Official Announcement – 14 May 2021

‘Steve Bruce has been named the Barclays Manager of the Month for April 2021.

Newcastle United’s head coach wins the prize for the first time, 19 years and 465 matches into his Premier League managerial career, after last month’s four-match unbeaten run helped his side to ultimately secure safety.

“I’ve been going a long time to get one!” Bruce said. “A big thank you to the staff behind me, who’ve worked tirelessly, and of course more importantly the players, who have responded to the challenge and managed to get me the award.”

Comeback kings

April began with a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, before the Magpies came from behind again to win 2-1 at Burnley.

Newcastle then responded to a West Ham United fightback by scoring a late winner in a 3-2 victory, before grabbing a 1-1 draw at Liverpool thanks to Joe Willock’s stoppage-time equaliser.

“I suppose the last five minutes against Liverpool sort of summed us up really, where we had the disappointment of getting a goal disallowed,” Bruce added.

“And then we even came back for more in the last minute, so showing that little bit of spirit.”

Bruce won the award after votes from the public were combined with those of a panel of football experts. He beat fellow nominees Sam Allardyce, Marcelo Bielsa and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
