Steve Bruce admission ahead of Sheffield United “I picked the wrong team, it’s quite simple”
Steve Bruce says he is looking forward to Wednesday night for two main reasons.
Saying he has no worries, indeed quite the opposite, about the return of Newcastle fans to St James Park.
The Newcastle United Head Coach declaring: “I hope the 10,000 coming tomorrow, go to the pub beforehand, have a few beers and come and scream their team forward.”
As well as welcoming fans back to games, Steve Bruce is desperate for revenge.
Against some admittedly still opposition, the Sheffield United away game was arguably the very worst this season.
The Blades had lost eighteen and drawn two of their last 20 Premier League matches, yet Steve Bruce went with a back five and three defensive midfielders, only Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson potentially offering any threat in the attacking third.
Steve Bruce now stating he picked the wrong for that defeat at Sheff Utd and: ‘We want to avenge that if we possibly can.’
Steve Bruce has picked a lot of wrong teams and tactics this season and indeed in the next three matches after that loss to the Blades, Bruce and his team lost another three in a row. That loss at Bramall Lane came during a Steve Bruce run of eight defeats and a goalless draw in a nine match run.
Steve Bruce speaking at his pre-Sheffield United press conference, with up to 10,000 Newcastle fans set to be inside St James Park:
“I think we’ll start feeling it when we arrive tomorrow and see supporters.
“We had a flavour of it with the cup final and the play-offs and all of a sudden it’s a wonderful spectacle.
“We’ve all said it, if we ever need reminding what we play football for and what we’re in it for is supporters.
“I’m sure people will go to the pub before and after and discuss all the things that make this great game what it is.”
“I hope the 10,000 coming tomorrow, go to the pub beforehand, have a few beers and come and scream their team forward.”
On recent goalscoring form:
“We got beat in our last game but I have been delighted with us over the last few weeks.
“It’s about getting the balance right – we still concede too many.
“I’ve enjoyed watching us and we’ve done well of late.
“It’s important we keep the standard high.”
Asked about January defeat at Sheffield United:
“I picked the wrong team, it’s quite simple.
“You look back on it and learn from it.
“You have to hold your hands up that I didn’t do us any favours.
“It was one of the darker moments of winter.
“We want to avenge that if we possibly can.”
On Joe Willock:
“You can see him enjoying it and enjoying scoring.
“To take the ball off Joelinton for the penalty [against Man City] shows the state of mind – he wants to score.
“He’s given us another dimension from midfield.
“The distance him and Almirón cover from midfield is great to watch.”
