Newcastle United European success in black and white exactly 52 years ago – Watch it here

Newcastle United, the latest / last trophy the club has won, the Fairs Cup back in 1969.

‘Only’ the 52 years ago today did the Magpies complete an excellent 90 minutes that left them with one hand already on the Fairs Cup, at the halfway point.

The Fairs Cup Final first Leg 29 May 1969 seeing Hungarian side Ujpest Dozsa as the visitors to St James Park.

When the final whistle blew…

Newcastle 3 Ujpest Dozsa  0

Moncur (63, 71), Scott (84)

Crowd: 59,234

Only eight days after completing the semi-final success against Rangers, Newcastle United were back at St James Park to face Ujpest Dozsa in the first leg of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final.

The Hungarian opposition were one of Europe’s top teams at the time and after an hour the game was still without a goal.

However, Bobby Moncur chose this match to score his first ever senior goal for Newcastle…and then he added a second!

Jimmy Scott added a third and perfectly set United up for what would prove to be an eventful second leg in Budapest…

Newcastle United: McFaul, Craig, Clark, Gibb, Burton, Moncur, Scott, Robson, Davies, Arentoft, Sinclair (Foggon 75)

Every Newcastle United fan should be proud that our club is one of a select number of English clubs to have lifted a European trophy and thanks to the likes of Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby we were allowed European dreams and adventures once again.

Only one solitary European season in Mike Ashley’s 14 years (so far) and only one Premier League top nine finish during his reign.

Just as well we can dip back into better times, nostalgia…
