Newcastle 1 Sheffield United 0 – Wednesday 19 May 6pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

History man Joe Willock wins it, at 21 years 272 days he becomes the youngest player to score in six consecutive Premier League appearances.

Jamie Smith:

“Nice to beat Sheffield United to cancel out the sorry performance at Bramall Lane.

“Other than that a fairly average end of season job.

“Willock’s goal again emphasising what a fantastic signing he’s been, while probably sealing the fact that he’ll be somewhere more appealing than here next year.

“Great atmosphere from all that made it in and well worth focusing on the positives after a year of being shut in.”

Brian Standen:

“More an occasion than a good game, was not really sure what to expect.

“After a couple of early scares we should have been out of sight by half time but only 1-0.

“Momentum lost when ASM went off.

“However, a special word about Willock!

“He is raw and talented and we must sign him.

“As he could be some legend up here.

“As I say, tonight was about the occasion and I thought the fans were magnificent.”

GToon:

“A boring game played between two very average teams.

“I didn’t watch beyond the final whistle as the sight of Bruce saluting the fans would make me physically sick.

“Bye bye Willock and thanks for your efforts.

“Bye bye ASM, thanks for the excitement.

“Bye bye Ashley and Bruce, you won’t be missed.”

Dave Punton:

“Signing off the final home game of a largely poor season, but with the fans back and a home win it’s not been a bad night.

“The winning goal was a nice passing move finished off with a great header from that man Willock again.

“Can we sign him?

“The second half seemed more about the walking wounded as Newcastle players dropped like flies with injuries, notably Dubravka and ASM.

“Could that be Allan’s last game for the club?

“A lap of appreciation from the players at the end.

“What next season has in store we can only begin to wonder but the fans of this great club know it could really be a lot better with some proper investment.”

Billy Miller:

“Great to see and hear the return of fans.

“ASM was at his showboating best for his live audience.

“Easy win.

“How on Earth we lost to this lot previously, I’ll never know.

“Good end of season run but without a takeover I see little to be optimistic about next time around.”

Ben Cooper:

“It was good to be back at SJP.

“The result was insignificant, as was the performance.

“Just as well really.

“I went, I had fun, we won and that is it for tonight.

“Tomorrow is for wondering about nect season.

“For today I enjoyed the pace and intensity of Almiron, Willock and Maxi.

“Hopefully some of them will be here next season.”

Paul Patterson:

“And another season of mediocrity (at best) nears it’s conclusion.

“Joe Willock (and Jones in the dugout) has saved Bruce’s bacon.”

Nat Seaton:

“A great feeling to be back inside St James albeit for an end of season game with ‘nothing’ to play for.

“Sadly we played like a team that is 4th bottom of the league.

“Thankfully we were saved yet again by a Willock goal. It’s unlikely that he will be with us next season which is a shame as looking at him today he would be a good signing.

“Here’s hoping that this isn’t the team that will be starting our next Premier League campaign…”
