Leicester 2 Newcastle 4 – Friday 7 May 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

An unexpected Friday night pleasure, effectively confirming Newcastle United’s Premier League survival, plus goals and entertainment!

Jamie Smith:

“What the hell?

“I had blind optimism we could snatch a point here but feared a beating like last season.

“Instead the first half involved thundering out of the blocks in a display of slick attacking, complemented by a second half of lethal counter attacking.

“Slightly tainted by letting two late goals slip but overall a comprehensive illustration of what this team is capable of, but sadly has repeatedly been nullified from achieving.

“A bit of pressure off for the run in, things may have got uncomfortable if Fulham started winning.

“I have no idea how rubbish we’ll be next season but getting Joe Willock in as a permanent part of a midfield that actually attacks would only be a good thing.

“Nice start to the weekend courtesy of NUFC, who’d have thunk it?”

Brian Standen:

“Have the dark forces moved aside?

“Who saw this coming?

“Sometimes you have to give credit as everyone played their part.

“Good pressing, attacking flair, unrecognisable from last weekend.

“One word – Willock! Absolutely top drawer.

“Disappointing to concede a couple late on but takes nothing away from a great night.”

GToon:

“In the first fixture at SJP we had Maddison and his dartboard impersonation.

“We had Tielemans with a huge smirk on his face after clattering one of our players, avoiding a red card and then getting the winner.

“We then had their fans with their “We always beat these. It’s just a case of how many”.

“Well who’s laughing now? I hope that keeps them out of the champions league and I hope they get hammered in the cup final. Vile little club with ignorant fans. Hahahahahaha.

“With regard to the game I thought we were excellent across the park.

“We looked sharp and we looked like the decent side we know we can be.

“Great result. Now roll on the takeover.

“One final mention for the ref. In a game of few real issues he was absolutely useless. He didn’t favour either side. He just had no idea. He ignored numerous poor challenges and was totally out of his depth.

“Luckily it didn’t matter.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Tonight showed we have some quality players in the squad, and thanks to the effort over the last few weeks, we will play top flight football next season.

“But, this doesn’t matter unless we have a proper management/ownership set up that want to improve us next season. We all know this.

“Still, you have to enjoy those rare moments of joy, like tonight.”

Dave Punton:

“Sensational from Newcastle.

“Raining goals at the King Power as we just about strolled to three very welcome points.

“An edgy final ten minutes, standard, but overall you have to be delighted with that against champions league chasing Leicester, who may have one eye on the FA Cup final, and were pretty awful tonight.

“Five goals in 11 for Joe Willock, a collector’s item for Paul Dummett and then a well taken brace for Callum Wilson, the second a goal where he showed amazing composure to stab the ball home after it bounces back off the post.

“And credit to Martin Dubravka for some vital stops to prevent a wobble.

“That is mathematical safety.

“A season with some horrid moments is ending with players and manager finding some form.”

Ben Cooper:

“An unrecognisable NUFC buried cup finalists Leicester with a dominant display that saw a 0-4 lead going into the last fifteen minutes, reduced by two late goals which still gave United a very good and very unexpected three points.

“A result which keeps them in the division for another year, who knows what that will bring.

“Apart from anything else, Newcastle played like a team today with every player playing their part in what was one of the best performances of the season.

“It helped that Leicester weren’t very good but that shouldn’t take anything away from a spirited and professional Toon performance.”

Billy Miller:

“As unexpected as it was enjoyable.

“Leicester were shocking first half but full credit to the players for taking advantage.

“Great to see Wilson grab a brace.

“Would have made for an extremely interesting final couple of minutes had Perez made it 3-4.”

Steve Hickey:

“Great result, totally out of character, the lads did us proud.

“The opposite of the attitude against Arsenal.

“Make no mistake, Leicester are a very good team who could be playing in the Champions League next season.

“Massive credit to all concerned and safe now.

“Time to celebrate!”

Paul Patterson:

“Now we are caught between the ultimate rock and a hard place.

“Getting results like that is good but it doesn’t half put a false slant on things.

“It will give you know who the very excuse to hand out glamorous and unjust contracts.

“Well done to the players that started though. Top effort.”

Nat Seaton:

“When Paul Dummett scores his first goal in over 5 years you’re thinking maybe this is our night…

“What a lovely feeling being able to watch a match 4-0 up but then we had to do our usual let’s make it interesting!!

“Great game, great result and safety all but assured.”
