I’m not usually one for conspiracy theories but this at Newcastle United…

I’m not one for conspiracy theories, I leave that to the wife and son as they seem to have plenty, but I don’t think it is coincidence that Steve Bruce has ended up as manager of Newcastle United.

I say this with despair in my voice, as there isn’t much worse as a manager out there.

It doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to work out that a manager who hasn’t won anything, has had as many clubs as Tiger Woods and has a Premier win rate of only 28%, the second lowest in the history of the Premier League, isn’t very good.

Allied to the fact that for the most part the football is dire and confusing…and it probably is to him too.

So why has Steve Bruce ended up at NUFC, or should that be SDFC?

Well, let me take you back to mid-2019 when everyone knew that Rafa Benitez had been forced out as the vision, or lack of it, from the owner didn’t match the vision of Rafa. Alan Shearer was quite rightly at the time saying what a shambles the club was, not only that, there was a swing in the media towards the fans.

Yes, I know some journalists and pundits will never be on the side of the Newcastle United fans. Step forward Martin Samuels – the pet journalist of Mike Ashley, also Ashley’s mate and pundit Simon Jordan – no lover of NUFC fans, then Rio Ferdinand whose label is exclusively available through Ashley. These three are never going to look to the facts that are there.

Some of the rest were at least listening to Shearer, if not the Newcastle United fans. Ian Wright, a mate of Shearer’s, was also starting to criticise Ashley.

So, it was a shock and disappointment to us all when Ashley and his minions appointed Steve Bruce, not only that, they paid compensation for him and his coaches, unheard of before in Ashley’s time. By all accounts, at the time the fee was £4 million, later in the Sheffield Wednesday accounts to be listed as £6.5 million. In any language this is a strange decision, but not generally at a club where strange decisions are the norm and logic has no place, or does it?

The decision to bring Bruce in – I say it has nothing to do with football, after all why would you honestly employ a serial failure?

No, it has everything to do with the media and everyone in football’s favourite Geordie.

Steve Bruce is friendly with a number of journalists who had in the past written articles against Ashley, Luke Edwards being one such journalist. You also have to look at the antagonistic stance of Savage and Sutton, as well as Peter Crouch slating Newcastle fans. Simon Jordan another friend of Bruce.

The criticism of Ashley has stopped from Shearer for the most part, as he doesn’t want to be seen to be critical of his friend Bruce, this has meant that Ian Wright who was also critical of Ashley and is a friend of Shearer’s, has also stopped.

So It would appear that the £4 million or £6.5 million that was spent on Bruce, is in Ashley’s eye money well spent, in fact it has cost him nothing as Bruce and his coaches cost a lot less than Rafa and his.

However, as we all know, you get what you pay for and as long as Bruce keeps them in the Premier League nothing will happen.

Bruce has been relegated twice, Ashley has relegated NUFC twice in 14 years, expect more of the same. As long as Bruce refuses to criticise Ashley he will remain in post.
