Fabian Schar red card – Newcastle United appealed and now independent panel verdict

Newcastle United have confirmed on Thursday morning that they appealed against the Fabian Schar red card on Sunday.

The Newcastle defender sent off late on in the Arsenal match after a challenge on Martinelli.

It was clearly a foul but as well as Newcastle fans, many neutrals felt a yellow card would have been enough.

Southampton appealed against the red card Jannik Verstergaard received against Leicester last weekend and yesterday they found out their appeal had been successful.

No such luck for Newcastle United or the player, as the club have also confirmed today (see below) that an independent panel have upheld the Fabian Schar red card against Arsenal.

This means he will only be able to play in the Fulham match before the season ends.

Newcastle United Official Announcement:

‘Newcastle United’s appeal against Fabian Schär’s red card, picked up during Sunday’s match against Arsenal, has been unsuccessful.

Schär was dismissed by referee Mike Dean in the 90th minute of the game following a tackle on Gabriel Martinelli.

An independent panel reviewed the incident following United’s appeal to the Football Association but has upheld the decision.

The Swiss defender will miss United’s next three matches against Leicester City, Manchester City and Sheffield United’
