Extraordinary Newcastle United and Sheffield United stat and as for the coverage…
Sheffield United are the visitors to St James Park this Wednesday night.
A 6pm kick-off with up to 10,000 Newcastle United fans set to be inside St James Park for this final home game of the 2020/21 Premier League season.
It is fifteen months since supporters were allowed inside St James Park, the last game a dismal 0-0 draw against Burnley back in February 2020.
The presence of fans obviously makes this match more of a talking point but speaking of which, I have found something else that I think is a point worth talking about.
An extraordinary Newcastle United and Sheffield United stat that you would certainly never guess from the coverage of the two clubs.
In their last twenty seven matches (all competitions), Newcastle United have won five of the 27 games.
In their last twenty three matches (all competitions), Sheffield United have won nine of the 23 games.
I find this very confusing…as I have been repeatedly told by journalists and football people that Steve Bruce is doing a brilliant job. In more recent times, the media have lectured us that Bruce is actually doing even better than brilliant, though I am so excited I struggle to think of a word that does his achievements justice, maybe ‘brillianter’…?
In these last 27 matches over a period of over five months, Newcastle United have beaten Burnley, Everton, Southampton, West Ham and Leicester.
In the 23 games going back just short of five months, amongst their victories, Sheffield United have beaten Manchester United away, Everton away as well, plus home wins over Aston Villa, Brighton and Newcastle United.
I think this proves just how much the football public are manipulated by the media, the journalists and the football people / pundits who inhabit the newspapers and our TV screens.
Newcastle United fans told repeatedly month after repeated month that they have unrealistic expectations and should be grateful for what Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce have done, that things are far better than NUFC supporters are claiming, should stop moaning etc etc.
It is quite amazing that this is what we have been constantly fed despite the appalling football and results, sprinkled with a handful of wins, at least two or three of even that meagre total owing a lot to luck.
Yes, Newcastle and Steve Bruce doing so well to win five of twenty seven matches (all competitions), whilst the worst team in the Premier League, Sheffield United, are winning nine of twenty three games (all competitions).
Another stat to throw out is that these last 16 months of Steve Bruce’s 22 months reign (so far…) have seen only six NUFC Premier League wins at St James Park, so we aren’t only talking about the more recent ‘brilliant’ results and football we are being subjected to by Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley.
I won’t be at St James Park tonight but I do really hope that the ten thousand Newcastle fans who are there, have something to shout about, that is shout about because something good has happened on the pitch.
The way the media have become so distorted, far more will be made of it if Newcastle United manage to beat at home (in front of fans) the already relegated worst team in the league, as opposed to if bottom of the table and long ago relegated Sheffield United manage a win away from home (with no travelling fans allowed) against the brilliant Steve Bruce and his team.
Strange but true.
