Belgium have gone early with their 26 man Euro 2021 squad.

Monday (17 May 2021) seeing them name nine players from the Premier League in the finals squad (see below).

Kevin De Bruyne (Man City), Youri Tielemans (Leicester), Michy Batshuayi (Chelsea / Palace), Christian Benteke (Palace), Leander Dendoncker (Wolves), Dennis Praet (Leicester), Toby Alderweireld (Spurs), Leandro Trossard (Brighton) and Timothy Castagne (Leicester).

There are also a host of other players named amongst the 26, who have also in the past played in England, indeed the majority of the 26 are past or present with English clubs.

The likes of Lukaku, Hazard, Chadli, Vermaelen and Vertonghen.

Plus all three goalkeepers – Courtois (ex-Chelsea), Mignolet (ex-Mackems and Liverpool), as well as a certain Matz Sels who started the first nine Championship matches for Newcastle United back in 2016.

After a loan spell at Anderlecht, Matz Sels was sold by Newcastle to Strasbourg and was one of the highest rated goalkeepers in Ligue 1 throughout 2018/19 and 2019/20.

Sels though had nine months out with a bad Achilles injury and only just recently returned at the start of April 2021.

After playing half a dozen matches, the former NUFC keeper is now finding himself having to self-isolate after contracting the virus.

Euro 2020 (yes, it does seem daft they kept that in the title despite the finals moved to 2021) kicks off on Friday 11 June and ends with the final on Sunday 11 July at Wembley.

The final deadline for naming the 26 man squads is 1 June and Gareth Southgate is reportedly set to announce his next week (week beginning Monday 24 May).

For Newcastle United, Martin Dubravka looks a certainty to be in the finals with Slovakia. However, whether Ryan Fraser is there with Scotland remains to be seen, as the winger is currently out injured.

Fabian Schar (Switzerland) will surely be named despite limiting his game time with that red card, Emil Krafth also, as he’s a regular squad player with Sweden.

Callum Wilson may have had some kind of a chance with a flurry of goals in the final weeks of the season but the injury during his two goal performance against Leicester looks to have ended any faint hopes.
