9 Newcastle United winners of Premier League Player Of The Month in 28 years – Stunning stats
The great news on Saturday morning, was that Joe Willock had become the ninth Newcastle United winner of a Premier League Player Of The Month in 28 years.
First handed out for the month of August 1994, Jurgen Klinsmann was the first ever Premier League Player Of The Month.
The second recipient?
Rob Lee of Newcastle United picking up the September 1994 Premier League Player Of The Month award.
Looking back through the history of this Premier League Player Of The Month honour, it mirrors pretty much the overall health of our club as the years have passed.
Some stunning stats and food for thought coming up…
Newcastle United winners of the Premier League Player Of The Month:
September 1994 – Rob Lee
August 1995 – David Ginola
November 1995 – Rob Lee
September 1998 – Alan Shearer
December 2002 – Alan Shearer
October 2003 – Alan Shearer
December 2011 – Demba Ba
November 2013 – Tim Krul
May 2021 – Joe Willock
So after eight years without a winner, Newcastle United get a ninth Premier League Player Of The Month success and he isn’t even our player! Seemingly no chance of signing Joe Willock permanently, no offer allowed by Mike Ashley yet and no confidence that there will even be one, to test whether Arsenal would sell.
In the seventeen and a half years (including the first 13 years 11 months of the Mike Ashley reign) before Joe Willock in May 2021, only two winners in that time period. On that kind of basis we might see the next NUFC winner in another seven or eight years, if we are lucky.
To think, of the first 14 Premier League Player Of The Month awards handed out, Newcastle United won three of them!
A bit of a shame that the award didn’t start a year earlier, as for sure Newcastle United would have had more winners. Players such as Rob Lee and Scott Sellars were class acts and as for Andy Cole and Peter Beardsley, the pair scored 55 Premier League goals between them in 1993/94 and were nothing short of brilliant.
I’m amazed that Shay Given never won one, the best ever Newcastle United goalkeeper and one of the very best the Premier League has seen.
Players who have won most Premier League Player Of The Month awards:
6 Gerrard, Kane
5 Rooney, Van Persie
4 Alan Shearer (and a handful of others)
Alan Shearer won only one before arriving at Newcastle United, that was November 1994, the season Blackburn won the Premier League, Shearer though having to share the award with teammate Chris Sutton that month.
Clubs with most Premier League Player Of The Month winners:
39 Man Utd
16 Man City
9 Newcastle United (plus Everton and Villa)
As in so many things, Newcastle United next in a set of Premier League stats after the usual six suspects.
Obviously the monthly award depends on timing of matches as well, so a run of form that fits into a particular month. However, beyond that you have to also think these stats above are a little strange.
Chelsea have won the league five times in the PL era and their players have won 19 Premier League Player Of The Month awards.
Yet Liverpool (one PL title win) have had 29 winners and Tottenham (no PL title wins) with 23 monthly player awards.
It would be good to believe that one day soon Newcastle United will be competing for trophies and the upper end of the league table, as well as NUFC players competing for individual awards as well.
The ‘only’ thing holding this club back is Mike Ashley and the absence of ambitious ownership.
Former Newcastle United players who have picked up Premier League Player Of The Month awards whilst at other clubs are: Duncan Ferguson, Chris Waddle, Andy Cole, Michael Owen, David Ginola, Stuart Pearce, Louis Saha, Kevin Nolan, Scott Parker and Fraser Forster.
