Deportivo Municipal fans comment on Rodrigo Vilca signing for Newcastle United
The final day of the summer 2020 transfer window saw Rodrigo Vilca arrive at St James Park.
The 21 year old attacking midfielder signing from Deportivo Municipal for an ‘undisclosed’ fee.
Both the player and the fans (of Deportivo Municipal) have been reacting to the move.
The comments of the Deportivo Municipal supporters especially interesting (see below) on seeing their star play move.
Billed as a potentially exciting signing, Rodrigo Vilca will initially train and play with the NUFC Under 21s to help him adapt, especially physically, to the demands of football in England.
This is what Rodrigo Vilca had to say after he signed:
“At the beginning, I could not believe the opportunity to jump directly from Peru to a Premier League club.
“The process had a lot of phases, with all this Covid disaster, so it has been a rollercoaster of emotions.
“I have cried with emotion, not once but several times, because there have been different milestones. At times I have been tense, but now i am very happy and I hope to have a long and successful time in Newcastle.
“It seems a very nice city, the hotel has a very nice view (of the Tyne and Millennium bridges) and I hope to train as soon as possible now. I don’t want to lose time – I want to be ready!”
The Deportivo Municipal supporters (they refer to their club as Muni) have had plenty to say about the transfer (see below).
The overwhelming feeling appears to be one of pride and really hoping one of their own can succeed in the Premier League.
Many of them referring to the need for Vilca to build up his physique but insisting he has all the other attributes to succeed.
Whilst reference as well to the fact that a certain other Peruvian future superstar once played for them. Nobby Solano played at Deportivo Municipal as a 19 year old back in 1993 and eventually signed for Newcastle from Boca Juniors in 1998.
Also interesting that like football fans the world over, when losing their star player the ‘Muni’ fans are hoping the transfer cash is reinvested and doesn’t just disappear!
