Very strange fans choice of Newcastle team v Southampton
We asked fans the question, which 11 players would you pick in your Newcastle team v Southampton?
We put together a list of the 23 players who looked as though they could potentially be selected for this game.
With the pre-Southampton Steve Bruce press conference taking place on Thursday night immediately after the win at Bramall Lane, it has meant no exact clarity on the injury/fitness update front.
When asking fans to select their Newcastle team v Southampton, we gave the following info:
‘In midweek, Steve Bruce said that as well as Lascelles and Ritchie missing, he was going to give Lejeune more time after his two injuries in quick succession.
On top of that, it turned out Saint-Maximin played on Thursday with an ankle injury and was limping around afterwards with ice on it.
However, we have left both ASM and Carroll as options, as still possible they could be in the squad.’
Whatever factors you might point to, they have led to a very strange team selection from Newcastle fans this time.
Dubravka yet again getting what is regularly becoming 100% support and leading the way.
Then we have only three others getting 90% or more backing, Willems with 96% and then Shelvey (93%) and Clark (91%).
Three others in the 80% or more range – Fernandez on 87% and Almiron & and Saint-Maximin both 86% (despite the latter very doubtful to be available to start in our opinion).
Then ranked 8th to 10th for supporters you have Schar (77%), Hayden (76%) and Manquillo (69%).
Then making up the final piece of this strange team selection, Dummett (46%) is just ahead of Joelinton (43%) and Carroll (40%).
Now I know that Newcastle’s strength lies in defence but this is taking it a bit far…
I make it that we have Dubravka and six defenders (Fernandez, Clark, Schar, Dummett, Manquillo and Willems.
Then two central midfielders (Shelvey and Hayden) and two attacking players (ASM and Almiron).
If putting these into some kind of formation, I suppose you would have to move Willems forward as a midfielder (or Schar possibly), with ASM or Almiron as a ‘false number 9’ or something along those lines.
Not exactly a massive vote of support for our striking options, Gayle only getting 25% support as well.
This is how the Newcastle team v Southampton looks based on the fan votes with percentage votes rounded up/down to nearest whole number for each of the 23 players.
