Steve Bruce Stability or Bruce’s Bouncebackability?

Looking at the Premier League season so far and with particular regard to Newcastle United, I have noticed a peculiar pattern in the league results under Steve Bruce’s.

The season opened with a narrow defeat at home to Arsenal.

Then there was that shocker away at Norwich.

However, after that, if you break down subsequent games into three game cycles, Steve Bruce has won one, drawn one and lost one in every sequence.

We can all tell stories about statistics that fit our own narrative.

His friends in the media would tell us that this level of consistency vindicates his appointment as a safe pair of hands.

I would be more inclined to say it shows how he’s consistently bouncing from game to game, unable to put a run of consistent performances together but using previous results or a precarious league position to “get a reaction” then failing to maintain the standard set…. and players will sharp get bored of that.

Having beaten Sheffield United in game 15, it will be interesting to see if things drop off again with another draw and defeat from Southampton and Burnley.
