Sheffield United 0 Newcastle 2  – Thursday 5 December 7.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle winning 2-0 at Bramall Lane with a goal in each half.

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“An expertly crafted win, that will be a big three points come May.

“To keep a clean sheet with a degree of comfort as well, the last week has felt like a real turning point in the season.

“Thought Shelvey and Hayden were outstanding in the middle of the park.

“If can win Sunday, we then have a chance to put distance between ourselves and the stragglers over Christmas.”

Jamie Swan:

“Unexpected result!

“Pure away day defensive sh..-housery filth of the highest standard.

“Sheff United had 99% of the ball, couldn’t breach the backline, well they could but couldn’t beat Dubravka who was absolutely outstanding.

“Even the Gods of VAR gave us a second goal even though the lino tried to bump us.

“Hard worked, hard earned and up to 11th.

“They’ll probably feel hard done by, good luck to them this season – but tonight was our night! Geet up.”

Brian Standen:

“Competent performance and for sure we rode our luck!

“But thanks to Dubravka and ASM we get the points!

“Second goal…Hmmmm play to the whistle you fools!

“Personally, for me Manquillo and Shelvey chased Dubravka for MOTM.

“Celebrate and bring on the Saints!”

David Punton:

“Sheffield steel?

“No. A Sheffield steal for the Mags. A delicious three points on a Thursday night.

“I had this game down as a very tough ask but the players came through. Credit to them.

“Finally a forward scores and VAR does its job.

“Happy days (enjoy it while it lasts).”

Ben Cooper:

“A comfortable win for Newcastle in the end after a first half ASM header and a second half Shelvey one on one.

“If the Blades had taken one of their 8 first half chances then it might have been different but Dubravka kept them out.

“More VAR nonsense will take some of the headlines away from a committed and disciplined defensive display.”

George Stainsby:

“If we had strikers who could score, we’d be a very canny team. Turn up the VAR!”

Kieran Reynolds:

Backs against the wall at times but we showed great resolve and character to get the three points.

“We scored two quality goals and Dubavka was superb.

“Whisper it quietly, we are actually looking quite good at the moment…”

Nat Seaton:

“A great performance from our 7 man defence and the keeper had another great game.

“A clean sheet away from home but more importantly 3 points to take us up the table.

“Celebrating the second goal was brilliant!!! Going home very happy…”

Paul Patterson:

“I’ve always said that it pays to have a lucky manager rather than a good one.

“Bruce appears to be that manager.

“You simply don’t get away with the sort of stats we keep having on a regular basis.

“If only Benitez, Sir Bobby or even KK had had this sort of luck…”
