Premier League table constricts at bottom with Wednesday results ahead of Newcastle at Sheffield Utd

Results on Wednesday night have left the Premier League table looking very congested towards the bottom.

Newcastle United take on Sheffield United on Thursday night and the result of that match, could make a significant difference to either team.

A win for the Blades would take them to sixth and 22 points, whilst the Magpies would go 11th with a victory (mathematically but not realistically, NUFC could go 9th).

As things stand, Newcastle are one of seven clubs separated by only two points, from Bournemouth in 12th down to Everton in 18th.

Whilst Watford and Norwich are looking relegation favourites, it was maybe always the case that Southampton had a bit more about them to get out of trouble. In consecutive games they have now beaten both Watford and Norwich and as things stand, are only a point behind Newcastle before the pair meet at St James Park on Sunday.

Steve Bruce’s team would be doing themselves a massive favour if beating Sheffield United, whilst even a draw would go some way to settling nerves.

However, a defeat would leave Sunday’s encounter with the Saints looking a very high pressure encounter as we move into the busy festive period.
