Michael Owen predicts Sheffield United v Newcastle United
Michael Owen has been looking ahead to Bramall Lane on Thursday night.
Sheffield United are so far looking like one of the big Premier League stories of the season.
Liverpool and Leicester head the table of course but with where they have come from, Sheffield United are doing remarkably well in seventh.
Yesterday they took a second minute lead at Wolves and eventually had to settle for a draw as the home side equalised just after an hour. However, that 1-1 result makes them the first promoted club in the Premier League era to be undefeated in their first seven away games.
As well as Wolves, Chelsea, Everton, West Ham and Tottenham have all failed to bet a visiting Blades side.
If Newcastle are looking for any encouragement then Thursday’s hosts have lost three at home, though two of those were against the top two (Liverpool and Leicester). The only real blot was losing 1-0 to Southampton at home back in September.
The Blades haven’t lost in 10 weeks since an unlucky 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, so a win would be very impressive for Newcastle and a draw very credible.
Chris Wilder has done an unbelievable job at a club that has spent the vast majority of their time in the third tier in recent decades.
Promoted from League One in 2016/17 and then up from the Championship last (2018/19) season, to be on 19 points is staggering, considering they had relatively minor investment in the summer.
Michael Owen predicts that we will see a ‘more spirited and energetic side at Bramall Lane’ than we did at Aston Villa last Monday. Well one thing is for certain, if we don’t see that then Newcastle will lose.
Sheffield United blew Man Utd away in their last home game and should have been far more than 2-0 up. They then had a bit of a nightmare seven minutes after passing the 70 minute mark, conceding three goals in rapid succession, possibly showing a little naivety and inexperience, as well as looking tired after their early exertions. However, they showed incredible credit to come back late and seal a 3-3 draw, although they could even have won it late on.
Michael Owen goes for a draw and I would take that if offered now.
Last season Newcastle got two draws (Cardiff and Wolves) at two of the promoted clubs and won at Fulham.
This season NUFC can’t keep rely on pulling out surprise results against the better teams by taking the minimal chances created. With defeats already at Norwich and Aston Villa, Steve Bruce’s team could really do with not making a hat-trick of away losses to the clubs that came up this time.
Sheffield United have both scored more goals (17) and conceded less (13) than Newcastle, only Watford (9) scoring less than NUFC’s 13 and only West Ham (23) outside the bottom three having conceded more than Newcastle’s leaked 22.
Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:
“A terrific point for Newcastle at home to Manchester City on Saturday.
“While the Blades maintained their unbeaten Premier League away record with a valuable point against a good Wolves side at Molineux.
“The Magpies were ordinary in their last away game at Villa Park.
“But I think we will see a more spirited and energetic side at Bramall Lane.
“I can’t split the teams.
“Tip: Game to finish in a draw.”
