Michael Owen picks out ‘Outstanding’ Newcastle United star who is in form
Michael Owen has been discussing Saturday’s game at Turf Moor.
Newcastle United travel hoping to get back into the top half, having spent just over 24 hours there before Arsenal won at West Ham on Monday night. If every result went Newcastle’s way they could go as high as sixth…
Burnley are looking for a win to take them away from near the relegation zone. Only three points above third bottom, it shows just how tight it is for most of the Premier League (only nine points from 5th to 18th) when a Burnley win would take them only a point behind Newcastle.
The Clarets had a good start to the season with 12 points and only two defeats in the opening eight games, only for them to go in reverse, losing six matches and only picking up six points in these last eight games.
For Newcastle it has been even more dramatic and the opposite to Burnley, Steve Bruce’s team picking up only seven points in the first eight games and then 14 in these last eight.
A key figure in that bounceback has been Jonjo Shelvey, scoring in each of the last three matches and in four of the last six, games where Shelvey scored saw Newcastle pick up 10 points.
Michael Owen says that Jonjo Shelvey ‘has been in outstanding form of late’ and that Newcastle’s upturn in results is ‘epitomised’ by the midfielder.
Shelvey has now scored five Premier League in four months, whilst in the previous 54 months he scored five in the top tier.
Owen predicts a draw on Saturday and with recent results that wouldn’t be a bad result for Newcastle. However, having enjoyed ridiculous luck recently in picking up so many points despite playing poorly/averagely and creating minimal chances, it would be great to see Newcastle turning to attack and go all out for a win, to try and build on the lucky breaks they have had.
With confirmation that Allan Saint-Maximin won’t play until 2020 due to a hamstring injury, Newcastle need to find some other means of attack in the busy festive period, instead of sitting back so deep and simply relying on ASM to dribble up the pitch.
Very interesting to see what the team selection and tactics are in his absence on Saturday.
Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:
“Burnley have lost six of their last eight league games.
“While Newcastle are unbeaten in three and have picked up seven points from the last nine available.
“The Clarets begin the weekend only three points above the drop zone and they badly need a positive result at what is likely to be a nervous Turf Moor.
“I expect them to pick up a valuable point against a Magpies side.
“Whose upturn is epitomised by Jonjo Shelvey who has been in outstanding form of late.
“Tip – Game to finish in a draw.”
