Mark Lawrenson comments about Newcastle visit to Sheffield United make little sense – Just for a change
Mark Lawrenson has been looking ahead to Thursday night at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United doing a remarkable job under Chris Wilder, especially considering they were in League One only three seasons go.
With 19 points already in 14 games, the Blades sit seventh in the Premier League.
Mark Lawrenson has admitted he might have ‘slightly’ misjudged Wilder’s team this season.
Whilst they have only lost three of 14 Premier League matches so far, if you look at Mark Lawrenson’s predictions table after 14 matches (see below), the BBC Sport pundit has predicted them to lose 11 of those 14 matches, form which would have left them second bottom on only seven points if is forecasts had come true.
As for Newcastle, so far Mark Lawrenson has forecast NUFC to have lost nine of their 14 matches and be on 13 points, three less than their actual total.
Ironically, despite never (as always) predicting Liverpool to lose a game, Lawrenson would actually have Man City top of the table, instead of the reality which is that the scousers are 11 points ahead of Man City.
As for his comments on Thursday night’s match, Mark Lawrenson believes: ‘It is going to be interesting what Newcastle try to do against them and how much energy they (NUFC) have got left. Because they worked so hard in their draw against Manchester City on Saturday.’
Not sure how it would be Newcastle who would be tired as Sheffield United have had a day less to prepare, having played on Sunday at Wolves. Plus the Blades play with a high energy all action style that will take its toll.
Anyway, fatigue will surely be far more of a factor to contend with in the next round of games, as Newcastle kick off on Sunday at home to Southampton less than 65 hours after this Sheffield United game will end.
A tough match for Newcastle this midweek and Mark Lawrenson for only third time in 15 matches, goes for a Sheffield United win (2-10, hopefully he is just as successful with this prediction as he usually is.
Mark Laawrenson Premier League table based on his predictions in first 14 games:
Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:
“Sheffield United keep on picking up points and I am very aware I have not tipped them enough to win this season.
“I keep thinking they will run out of steam…
“But that has not happened and they have already shown that they are far better than I thought they were.
“I thought they would stay up but I did not expect them to be as high as they are and they just look so comfortable at this level.
“It is going to be interesting what Newcastle try to do against them and how much energy they (NUFC) have got left.
“Because they worked so hard in their draw against Manchester City on Saturday.
“Prediction is Sheffield United 2 Newcastle United 1.”
