Nigel Pearson is the new/latest Watford Manager.

The former Newcastle United Coach becomes the third person to have the job this season with only 15 games played so far in the Premier League.

The Hornets have covered themselves to an extent by limiting Pearson’s initial employment until the end of this season.

The past 16 days had seen four Premier League managers lose their jobs (see below), including Watford sacking Quique Sanchez Flores on Sunday.

Nigel Pearson takes over with Watford three point adrift at the bottom of the Premier League and his first game is home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Watford official statement:

The Hornets are pleased to confirm the appointment of Nigel Pearson as Head Coach on a contract that runs initially until the end of this season.

The 56-year-old will take up his post after the weekend, with Hornets’ Under-23s coach Hayden Mullins remaining in interim charge for Watford’s Premier League home fixture against Crystal Palace tomorrow (Saturday December 7).

Pearson has a wealth of managerial experience. He drove a successful bid for post-promotion Premier League survival with a run of seven victories in nine games at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, having secured his side a top-flight place during the previous season.

Watford’s Chairman & CEO Scott Duxbury said of the club’s move to appoint Pearson: “Nigel is an impressive coach and comes with all of the experience and success we believe can have a very positive impact on our season.

“It’s been a pleasure spending time listening to the passion with which he talks about the game. His enthusiasm, organisation and motivation will I’m certain prove essential in driving the team forwards and upwards over the coming weeks and months.”

During two spells at the King Power Stadium, the former Derby County and Hull City boss also led the Foxes to a League One title and two Championship Play-Off places as well as that 2013/14 Championship title win.

A former England Under-21 assistant coach, Pearson has also held managerial roles at Southampton and Carlisle – and was most recently employed at Belgian outfit Oud-Heverlee Leuven.

“I’d like to thank Hayden Mullins for stepping in to coach the team on an interim basis. He is fully deserving of everyone’s gratitude,” added Duxbury.

“Tomorrow gives the perfect opportunity for Nigel to be officially introduced to our supporters as Hayden leads the team in the quest for a very important three points.”

The Mag – 5 December 2019:

Thursday night has seen yet another Premier League manager get his marching orders.

Everton have sacked Marco Silva.

The Everton forcing him out after only 18 months in the job.

That makes him the fourth Premier League manager in 16 days to go after Watford sacked Quique Sanchez Flores on Sunday.

This followed the Arsenal fans striking again, forcing manager Unai Emery out of the club.

Mauricio Pochettino the other one to leave and spark this four going in 16 days.

There are now only 10 Premier League clubs of the 17 that ended the 2018/19 season (and didn’t get relegated) who still have the same manager.

The following having departed:

Chris Hughton (Brighton)

Maurizio Sarri (Chelsea)

Rafa Benitez (Newcastle United)

Javi Gracia (Watford)

Mauricio Pochettino (Spurs)

Unai Emery (Arsenal)

Quique Sanchez Flores (Watford)

Marco Silva (Everton)

Back to and including May 2016, it will mean Everton have had five different managers in just over three and a half years, when they make their next appointment.

Official Everton statement:

‘Everton Football Club can confirm that manager Marco Silva has left the Club.

Majority Shareholder Farhad Moshiri, Chairman Bill Kenwright and the Board of Directors would like to thank Marco for his service over the last 18 months and wish him well for the future.

Duncan Ferguson has taken temporary charge of the first team and will manage the side for the game against Chelsea on Saturday.

The Club aims to confirm a new permanent manager as swiftly as possible.’
