Charlie Nicholas milks it after winding up Newcastle fans

Charlie Nicholas has been enjoying himself.

The Sky Sports pundit doing his best to be provocative ahead of Thursday’s match against Sheffield United.

Saying to Newcastle fans: ‘Steve Bruce is doing a much better job than what Rafael Benitez did.’

Enjoying the fact he got a healthy reaction to that, Charlie Nicholas now says ahead of the game against Southampton: ‘I got a lot of stick over the week for saying Steve Bruce was doing a better job than Rafael Benitez was. It seems some people can never give anyone credit for the job they are doing.’

The point is of course, he knows exactly what he was/is doing.

You can praise Steve Bruce for what is happening this season without mentioning Rafa Benitez.

It is the same club but two very different circumstances.

You can’t say Steve Bruce should guarantee better results but when you consider £80m has been spent on the NUFC front three in 2019, compared to how Mike Ashley starved Rafa Benitez of proper transfer market support for almost three years, it isn’t/wasn’t a level playing field.

As for Sunday’s match, Newcastle approach it on a run of 10 points from the last five games and Southampton seven points from the last three.

Newcastle got away with ultra defensive tactics against Sheffield United so interesting to see how Steve Bruce approaches this game against the Saints at home.

The visitors have only won once at St James Park in these past 22 years so here’s hoping they travel as well as they usually do, whatever the tactics are that Steve Bruce employs.

Charlie Nicholas speaking to Sky Sports:

“This is another belter of a game.

“Newcastle look to have finally cracked playing at St James Park, as Manchester City will testify.

“I got a lot of stick over the week for saying Steve Bruce was doing a better job than Rafael Benitez was.

“It seems some people can never give anyone credit for the job they are doing.

“Southampton, meanwhile, are full of confidence after a couple of wins and in Danny Ings have one of the Premier League’s in-form strikers.

“But apart from Ings, like Newcastle, Saints are struggling to find goals from elsewhere.

“I have a feeling this could be the weekend Joelinton and Miguel Almiron finally break their ducks.

“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Southampton 1.”
