Burnley 1 Newcastle 0 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction to Saturday’s defeat

Burnley 1 Newcastle 0 – Saturday 14 December 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle losing 1-0 in a dire performance without a single NUFC effort on goal.

Jamie Swan:

“Not surprised at the result or the scoreline.

“Was always going to be scrappy and it was beyond that.

“Lacking in quality all over the pitch for both sides in a grim match between two grim teams.

“One could always have won it but having said that Gayle missed a pure sitter.

“Joelinton got more involved from the left wing but still mainly terrible.

“Apart from his layoff to Gayle from the right creating a great chance.

“Longstaff was well rusty today, maybe his shocking 5-aside tash on his top lip put him off his game!

“Clearly when you take out Shelvey, ASM and Miggy in one go we were going to be affected.

“In truth we offered sweet nothing up top.

“Nowt but huff and puff and cant remember Pope having to make any kind of save?

“Not one to cry over as we have had plenty go our way in the last ten days. Another tough one against Palace next.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Not a complete surprise considering the team but disappointing to not compete more in the second half with a slightly fragile Burnley team.

“Poor performance for me.”

David Punton:

“What an abject game of professional football.”

Ben Cooper:

“A match which was like a migraine with a ball, was decided by a one yard Wood header from a corner which was possibly the only decent pass of the game.

“It might not have counted, the corner it came from maybe a foul on Fernandez, but the referee had long since given up trying to arbitrate this brawl.

“It was always going to be tough for United, without main goalscorers Shelvey and Clark, but Gayle missing from four yards apart, NUFC created very little.

“The Toon did play more on the front foot though, shame it was Jeremy Corbyn’s front foot.”

Brian Standen:

“That’s why the jury is still out!

“Frankly it was awful, Manquillo I suppose had a decent game.

“The rest instantly forgettable.

“Referee was awful to say the least as well but he was equally bad to both teams!

“Horrible place, horrible weather, horrible day.”

Paul Patterson:

“Not a shot on target.

“Shameful if this is playing on ‘the front foot’.”

Nat Seaton:

“Disappointing result from a disappointing away performance and a disappointing goal to give away as we did.

“When you have no shots on target (and we were playing with two up front!) you cannot whinge that we were unlucky.

“Here’s hoping for a big improvement next Saturday.”
