BBC Sport uncover very depressing Newcastle United statistic
Some interesting, but very depressing, statistics have been uncovered by BBC Sport following the Burnley 1 Newcastle 0 match on Saturday.
They have revealed that yesterday was the first time in their entire Premier League history, that one of Burnley’s opponents had failed to register an effort on target.
In 206 matches their opponents had always managed at least one effort on target but playing with such negative tactics, Steve Bruce became the first ever manager (head coach) to ‘achieve’ this in Burnley’s 207th Premier League match.
In connection with that, BBC Sport delved further.
After the end of Saturday’s action, there had been 166 Premier League matches.
In all of those 166 matches, 332 separate team performances, only nine times had a team failed to have an effort on target this season.
Embarrassingly, Steve Bruce and Newcastle United have been responsible for a third of those.
Newcastle not having a single effort on target this season in the matches against Chelsea, Leicester and now Burnley.
Number of shots on target per game by Newcastle this season against each opponent (stats via BBC Sport):
None – Burnley, Chelsea, Leicester
One – Liverpool
Two – Arsenal, Man Utd, Wolves
Three – Spurs, Man City
Four – Norwich, Brighton, Sheff Utd
Five – Watford, Aston Villa
Six – Southampton
Nine – Bournemouth, West Ham
No coincidence that in the three games where NUFC had most efforts on target, they won all three games.
Very depressing to see that in the majority (nine) of matches, Newcastle have had three or less efforts on target.
It does show though the huge luck Steve Bruce has enjoyed, as Newcastle have picked up a massive eight points from those matches where they have had three or less on target. From just 10 efforts in total against Man Utd, Spurs, Wolves and Man City, Newcastle scored five goals and picked up two wins and two draws.
The luck finally ran out at Burnley on Saturday and surely Steve Bruce must see now that getting on the ‘front foot’ is essential if Newcastle are to regularly pick up points.
