West Ham fans comments before AND after losing 3-2 to Newcastle United – Very illuminating
Interesting reading what West Ham fans were saying ahead of kick-off on Saturday.
Then even more interesting to also read below what they had to say AFTER losing 3-2 to Newcastle United.
Put the two sets of comments together and it gives the full picture.
A lot of people were surprised at West Ham losing and the manner in which they did. However, as you can see below, it was no surprise to most West Ham fans.
They were on a run of not winning in five games and could see serious weaknesses in their own set-up, weaknesses that even a poor Newcastle side might exploit if they weren’t addressed.
As was glaringly obvious to all, there was no better example of the lack of West Ham preparation for the game, when Zabaleta (will be 35 in January) was given the job of marking Saint-Maximin, a problem compounded by the entire Hammers defence pushing all the way up to the halfway line giving ASM all of that lovely space to run into.
West Ham fans commenting via their Knees Up Mother Brown message board:
‘Newcastle don’t look much but have some pace and a few good players. they will frustrate us as we go side to side.
If they score first then I fear we will get sunk by a few more breakaway goals.
A must win game especially with the fixtures coming up.’
‘As always, depends which west ham bothers to turn up.
We have lazy players who although they are good enough don’t produce regularly enough for us to achieve.
Pellegrini looks tired and just here for his large cheque. do we really pay him more than Klopp gets ?
I expect a reaction today but who knows.
What I do know is fail to beat a poor Newcastle TEAM AND WE ARE IN TROUBLE.’
‘Newcastle will have watched our last couple of games and so will know exactly how to approach this – which is why we need to change things up today.
Up and at em from the off and pray for the first goal to settle the nerves and open them up.
I’m not holding out too much hope though.’
‘Please show up today West Ham.’
‘Nothing but a win today otherwise this place will erupt.’
‘Newcastle if they have done their homework simply need to approach the game like Palace and Sheffield United did and I would expect a similar result.’
‘Big positive for us that Schär is out. One of few decent signings they’ve made it recent years.
I hope the bar codes come out a bit and try and play as they are difficult to break down, they defend in a 5-4-1 shape. Boring but effective.’
‘Newcastle create next to nothing going forward, and have only had an xG of more than 1 in two games this season – against Watford and Brighton. The only time they’ve tried anything other than a back nine is against Leicester when they played 4-2-3-1 and they lost 5-0.’
‘If the boss won’t allow our players who do have a record of scoring in the Premier league to get close to Haller I think it’s safe to say he’s unlikely to go two up top with an unproven (and seemingly reluctantly brought on as sub) player which will also probably allow the midfield to be dominated.’
‘If we can’t beat these at home, we’ve got serious problems.
Well, even more than we thought we had. Imo, this is now a must win game.’
‘My main concern is Newcastle have several players who have failed so far this season.
Jonjo Shelvey can’t hold down a regular place (30 yard screamer).’
‘Newcastle look like complete relegation fodder to date this season, so I wouldn’t say this is must win for us but it’s 100% should win.
‘Doubtless we’ll start with the same midfield that just played, fail to create anything, then see Haller criticised for not doing enough when he’s getting nothing but long balls to head down.’
‘Our goalkeeper was at fault for 2 goals albeit he saved us going in 4-0 by half time.
I think Newcastle player dived to get that free kick for their 1st goal (and Cresswell was actually fouled by the goalscorer).
That said, it was comical seeing Zab trying to get his legs moving even with a 7 yard advantage over Saint-Maximim.’
‘Tactically, Newcastle got the tactics spot on for the first-half: Hackney Marshes on a Sunday morning . . . boot the ball 50 yards and chase it . . . worked perfectly and did the job. Given that neither Cresswell or Zabaleta quite have the pace they once had (?) it seemed surprising to me that both Masuaku and Fredericks weren’t in the starting 11.’
‘That was embarrassing. Indeed, for me, it was very nearly the worst home performance I have witnessed in over 50 years. It was so bad, it was farcical.’
‘The failed signing of Salomon Rondón is also an issue now.’
‘That first 45 would be in probably the worst 20 performances I’ve ever seen by a WHU team. We were abject.
The starting selection was appalling.
The effort was comically bad.’
‘The Saint-Maximim counter attack was like the bad old days at the end of Bilic’s reign. In particular the Liverpool game where we lost 4-1 at home. We had a corner and 5 seconds later they had a 3 on 1 counter attack which Salah scored from.
There’s an argument that Fredericks and Masuaku should start week in and week out based on nothing more than their recovery pace to stop such situations occurring.’
‘Wide open through the middle. Easily beaten time and again by a simple ball over the top. Main striker isolated. No idea going forward. Baffling subs. Keeper’s a liability.
To think the media were bigging us up as top 6 contenders a few weeks back.
Last 3 home games that’s now 1 point gained from Palace, Sheff Utd and Newcastle.’
‘Let’s not pretend anymore. Today was the end of Noble. Off at half time against Newcastle at home. That’s the leader of the club. Forget the history of him, the guy isn’t leading anymore. It’s embarrassing if I’m honest.’
‘I know there wasn’t much to shout about but the perfectly observed 1 minute silence didn’t really have to continue for the next 95 did it.
Our fans are ****. They can boo louder than they can chant.’
‘The 3-2 scoreline flattered us. That was by far the worse I’ve seen us play this season.’
‘Another game were there has been inadequate scouting and planning of the opposition.’
‘Perhaps we should sign Almirón he looked decent against us.’
‘You think? I thought he was awful.’
‘If the opposition are playing 3 central defenders then why do persist on playing one striker. Other more quality teams can get away with it but not with the players we have. And starting Zab was a mystery to all I think. I reckon if Pell had his time again he would have started Fredericks. We needed him defending our offensive corners!’
‘The first goal was a foul from a counter attack, avoided if our fast fullbacks are there, the defending from the set piece was awful too.
Second and Third were all Roberto.’
‘The reason players tend to have good games against us is that we make no attempt to exploit their weaknesses.’
‘Shelvey often runs the show against us and does little else against the rest of the league.’
