West Ham 2 Newcastle 3 – Match ratings and comments on all NUFC players

We asked Jack Lacey-Hatton to give us his match ratings after West Ham 2 Newcastle 3.

Centre-backs Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark sending Newcastle into a two goal lead inside 22 minutes, the first time in 12 matches this season where Steve Bruce’s team had scored more than a single goal.

Then Jonjo Shelvey making it 3-0 early in the second-half before two late goals gave fans an anxious final few minutes.

Jack Lacey-Hatton gives us his NUFC player ratings and comments.

Dubravka – 7

A solid return to form after the mistake against Wolves for Dubravka.

The save in the first half from Balbuena’s header was a crucial point in the match and set the platform for the second half.

Yedlin – 6

Pace and agility down the right, our man from the States has been a key part of the team since returning to side.

Kept Felipe Anderson and then Yarmelenko well shackled.

Fernandez – 9

Has there ever been a more underrated player for Newcastle in modern times? At least since Hayden last season.

He made a number of key interceptions in our own penalty area to keep the Hammers at bay. Kept his cool at the end when the pressure was on.

Oh yeah and he scored a brilliant header to add to his assist from last week.

Lascelles – 7

He is quietly building his form again after a tough run in the team.

To form such a strong trio at the back is difficult and our captain has played a big part. Good organisation at the end.

Clark – 8

What a professional.

To bounce back from months out of the team with a run of great performances shows he is made of the right stuff. Brilliant header to open the scoring.

Willlems – 8

He is starting to show why he is a Dutch international, seems to keep getting better every time he plays for us.

Outstanding today, constantly causing problems in the first half and holding possession well when were under pressure in the second half. Delightful cross for the Fernandez goal.

Hayden – 8

A great return after his suspension.

Showed today how important he is to the team, setting a number of counter-attacks up when we were running through West Ham in the first half.

If he can keep showing creativity and maintain his defensive steel, we have one hell of a player on our hands.

Shelvey – 9

One of his better days, similar to his brilliant home debut against the same team in 2016.

Had a role in the first goal and kept driving the team forward. His quality free-kick capped a quite superb performance. Now for some consistency.

Saint-Maximin – 8

His pace and trickery tore apart the West Ham backline in the first half, at times he looked unplayable.

Only his finishing let him down from getting a ten. Should have scored at least twice.

Almiron – 6

Great energy and movement from Miggy and always wanted to get on the ball, even if he didn’t always make the right decision.

Should have scored when Saint-Maximin teed him up in the first half, which would have put the game out of sight.

Joelinton – 7

Much better.

Again, didn’t get in enough goalscoring positions but his workrate and link-up play was far better today, more like the player we saw at the start of the season.

Got a crucial assist with his header across for Clark’s goal. Helped with the team’s game management at the end.
