Possession stats stand out for Newcastle United v all of their Premier League rivals
Possession isn’t everything in football but it helps.
A new table has been published showing the overall possession stats for the first 12 Premier League matches.
It measures Newcastle United against their rivals.
The stats relate to the 14 clubs outside the ‘big six’, with Newcastle United a real stand out compared to their 13 rivals.
Leicester City are at the very top with an average of 55.1%, the Foxes using that possession to help them currently stand second in the Premier League.
All of the other 12 have at least 42.9% or more possession, apart from Newcastle United.
The Magpies averaging only 37.9%.
You don’t necessarily need a majority of the possession to get a majority of the points and indeed as Norwich’s 51.1% shows, it doesn’t guarantee anything.
However, I do think that you can have too little possession and if Newcastle don’t improve their figure into at least the low to mid forties, it could cause problems going forward if opposition teams start punishing NUFC when dominating play.
A mixture of gritty intelligent defending and luck, has helped to give Newcastle their 15 points total so far.
The possession table has been published by ‘The Other 14’ (who specialise on stats/tables etc on the 14 clubs who aren’t the ‘Big Six’):
Looking at the four wins so far this season, the possession figures for Newcastle (stats via BBC Sport) have been 20% v Spur, 32% v Man Utd, 30% v West Ham and 34% v Bournemouth. Ironically all four of those possession stats below that 37.9% average.
