Newcastle United players past and present battle it out for League One promotion ahead of Sunderland
The battle for League One promotion is hotting up and there is a real Newcastle United flavour at the top end.
At the weekend, Newcastle loan player Rolando Aarons came on in the 74th minute and helped Wycombe Wanderers to a very late 92nd minute win over Doncaster.
That keeps them top on 39 points, five ahead of Ipswich Town.
Meanwhile back in third, Peterborough are back in third on 31 points, eight points off the top.
They needed a 91st minute goal to beat Burton, with former Newcastle striker having scored 12 goals already in only 17 goals to spearhead their promotion challenge.
Whilst a point behind Peterborough in fourth are Rotherham, they came from two down to win 3-2 at MK Dons on Saturday. Newcastle loan midfielder Dan Barlaser leading the fightback with a first goal of the season (watch it below at 0.38) for him thanks to great persistence, that leading to three goals in the final 25 minutes by the visitors.
Then in seventh you have Joey Barton doing a surprisingly excellent job at Fleeetwood, they beat Tranmere to go seventh.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are struggling badly and it is looking a disastrous decision to bring in Phil Parkinson.
Before they had even seen the team play under him, many Sunderland fans were calling it a shocking appointment and after five defeats in seven games (all competitions), it hasn’t improved their mood.
The Mackems are now a massive 13 points behind leaders Wycombe Wanderers, the Wearsiders back in 10th, actually as close to the relegation zone (13 points) as they are to the top of the table.
