Mike Ashley sends club employee Bobby Moncur to tell Newcastle fans Steve Bruce has to be backed

As a director/employee of Newcastle United in recent years, Bobby Moncur has been a regular staunch defender of his boss.

The former Newcastle United star, willing to say pretty much anything to back up Mike Ashley’s shameful running of the football club.

A great shame when he was such a good player and captain of NUFC back in the day.

Just like Shola Ameobi, as a club employee (A club ambassador working for Mike Ashley) Bobby Moncur was always going to be wheeled out to tell fans to get behind the club, Steve Bruce, Mike Ashley, whatever…yet again.

Twenty four hours ahead of Newcastle facing Arsenal, Moncur has made his appearance.

We have heard it all before, in the past Mike Ashley has sent Bobby Moncur out to say what a great job John Carver was doing (see below), as well as saying  what a great appointment Steve McClaren was (see below) despite him having been sacked by Championship Derby County. This after Lee Charnley said he had searched the world for six months looking for the ideal successor to Alan Pardew.

Now Mike Ashley has wheeled out his employee, Bobby Moncur yet again, to say Steve Bruce is the right man etc etc

Anybody else feeling that they have heard this all before…

Bobby Moncur speaking to the Chronicle – 1 November 2019:

“Steve Bruce came in and had to get his bearings quickly. He had no influence about who he inherited but he is trying to work with those players and the summer signings to put his stamp on the team.”

“Steve is supported by good, experienced people at the club but he is also his own man. That is very important.

“He is very experienced and clearly a good judge of talent given some of the players, like Andrew Robertson and Harry Maguire, who have developed under him.”

“Even Fergie at Man United at the end would have players put to him by his scouts but he would want to know their character and about their lives.

“Steve Bruce will have had to learn about the character of his players quickly.

“If you ask players who have played for him, they will tell you he is a very good man-manager. That will stand him in good stead.”

“Even Rafa Benitez – as good a job as he did overall – had to endure relegation and then build from the Championship. Not easy, is it?

“Steve hasn’t had time to bed in.

“Of all the people bandied around, he came in and he had the experience.

“He is also from here. He knows what it is all about and he knows what is demanded.”

“I get disappointed when I see him getting stick after 10 games.”

“Steve is doing a job every Geordie would dream about – myself included – so let’s get right behind him.”

“You have to be brave as a manager and you have to be shrewd.

“Steve has those qualities and it is why he has survived in the game so long.

“To take the job on is brave, now let him get on with it.”

Bobby Moncur speaking to The Chronicle – 10 March 2015:

“I have seen John Carver at close hand working with the players at Newcastle United and I have to say it’s impressive to see.

“There are people who like the idea of a big name in charge but I think Newcastle have been down that route before.

“You don’t get bigger names in football than Ruud Gullit, Graeme Souness, Kenny Dalglish or Ossie Ardiles for example.

“I see where people are coming from in that perhaps John does not have the worldwide fame to attract player but he’s so passionate about the cub he can still sell the club to them and that makes up for it. One thing is for sure he fits in with what the club are looking for.

“He would work well with Lee Charnley and Graham Carr and I think three heads are better than one with transfers.”

Bobby Moncur speaking to the Chronicle after Steve McClaren appointed – 14 June 2015:

“One of the things which spurred me on was Mike Ashley doing his interview…

“A lot of the supporters are buoyed up and looking forward to next season. At the end of last season it was a bit doom and gloom and now that Mike has come out and changed things around a little bit with a new coach, a new board, people are looking forward to it.”

Bobby Moncur speaking to the Chronicle – 20 June 2015:

“The starting point for that final day was the owner going on TV. That was great. All the (corporate) lounges, everything stopped when he went on the telly. I think that was great, even last week I was speaking to people saying it’s given them a lift.

“People have this image of Mike Ashley but I’m fortunate that when I go to away games I sometimes speak to him, he is nothing like he is painted to be.

“He (Ashley) is quite a funny bloke, honest and up front, he has got a passion, I know people say he has got no passion for the club but he has.

“The fact he went on TV and said he’s got a passion for the club and he wants success was good. I have known that for some time but the problem you have is when you try to tell people who don’t know what he’s like, it’s hard to convince them.”

“If you were sat next to him he is down to earth and a good bloke…”
