Manuel Pellegrini admits he can’t comprehend 3-2 Newcastle United defeat “I do not understand…”
Manuel Pellegrini watched on as his team fell apart.
It could have been five or six to Newcastle United by the break and only the woodwork and poor finishing prevented it being a real hammering by the break.
The West Ham boss had no answer as his team were two down at the break.
When Shelvey made it three only five minutes into the second-half, thousands of West Ham fans had seen enough.
That the final score was only 3-2 to Newcastle was more to do with Steve Bruce’s negative tactics and slack defending than anything Manuel Pellegrini conjured up.
Manuel Pellegrini after the final whistle:
“Really difficult to explain why we played the way we did in the first 45 minutes…
“The other two games that we last played at home we started with pressing from the beginning, playing in the opposite half (going ahead against both Palace and Sheff Utd although then eventually losing and drawing those two games).
“Today, I do not understand why we played so, so bad.
“I am very concerned (with the team’s form), I think this lapse started against Oxford when we lost 4-0 in the cup and from this moment we have not won any more (now six without a win).
“We have to try and find the reason why this happening.
“When you are not winning then the confidence is not the same but you cannot repeat such low performances as we did in these first 45 minutes today…
“You can win or lose a lot of games in the Premier League but you must reflect (afterwards)…and that is my responsibility.
“The lack of energy (in the West Ham team) is not because they didn’t have the energy.
“But we need to review what we are doing and what is happening.”
