Garth Crooks picks surprise (to some) Newcastle United player in PL team of the week after Bournemouth
Garth Crooks has picked his best 11 performers from the weekend’s action.
The Premier League team of the weekend that has most impressed him.
Included in his top 11 is one player from the game at St James Park.
In the previous game at St James Park, Garth Crooks selected Jamaal Lascelles in his PL team of the week after the NUFC captain scored the equaliser against Wolves.
For me, I thought it was actually Fernandez who was top man at the back that day, plus he showed the rest of the team how to cross a ball with the brilliant assist for Lascelles.
Belatedly, Garth Crooks has recognised Federico Fernandez’ credentials and selected him this time, choosing the Argentine player head of the two Newcastle defenders who got the goals.
Crooks recognises the former Napoli star’s defending, plus he reveals that Fernandez had more touches of the ball on Saturday than any other home player and was joint top when it came to completed passes.
It always makes me laugh when Newcastle fans and neutrals act all surprised when Federico Fernandez.
The fact is that he is easily the most accomplished and experienced player in this Newcastle squad and yet another superb Rafa signing.
As a young player Fernandez won the league title in Argentina and then moved to Europe and has played all (apart from one game for Swansea in the Championship before signing for Newcastle in August 2018) of his league football in Serie A, La Liga and the Premier League.
In addition, Federico Fernandez has played Champions League football with Rafa at Napoli and also has over 30 caps for Argentina.
The only puzzle for me is why Mike Ashley only allowed a two year contract to be given when he signed and why now no extended deal has been put to the Argentine defender when his current deal will end in June (2020).
Garth Crooks explains why he picked Federico Fernandez in his Premier League team of the week and then the full eleven are listed below:
“Ciaran Clark and DeAndre Yedlin may have been the defenders who scored Newcastle’s goals but in was Fernandez who won them the points.
“It was the Argentine who was prepared to put his head in the fray to stop Joshua King from nodding home an equaliser.
“It was just enough for King to think about a clash of heads or a broken nose but it was enough.
“In the great scheme of things no-one can tell what this result will mean in the final analysis for either team but I sense that Newcastle will need these points more than Bournemouth.
“Did you know?
“Fernandez had more touches (62) than any other Newcastle player against Bournemouth and his 35 passes was a joint team high.”
