Former top referee rules on West Ham v Newcastle controversial incident

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his call on this West Ham v Newcastle match incident.

The incident happening when the scoreline was still goalless in the match at the London Stadium.

Fifteen minute gone and Miguel Almiron goes down after a challenge from Issa Diop,

Federico Fernandez having played a perfect ball down the right to the Paraguayan, who then cuts across Diop just outside the box.

Should that free-kick have been given though…?

Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:

Newcastle open the scoring from a free-kick after Almiron goes down under a challenge from Diop.

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

The free-kick should not have been given and with no free-kick, the opening goal wouldn’t have been scored. at least not in those circumstances.

Dermot Gallagher says:

“I think he (referee Stuart Attwell)  got the wrong angle, I don’t think the defender touches him and I don’t think it’s a foul.

“The defender gets a yellow card and then they (Newcastle) score from the free-kick.”

I hadn’t even realised anybody had any doubts about that opening goal and the free-kick that led to it. It does look as though Almiron is fouled on the footage I have seen, so not sure which clear footage Dermot Gallagher has seen to say the decision was definitely wrong.
