Ciaran Clark rounds off an excellent Thursday for Newcastle United internationals
Thursday night saw Ciaran Clark round off a satisfying day for Newcastle’s first team players on international duty.
The Magpies don’t have many international players compared to many other Premier League clubs but for three very positive individual stories yesterday.
First up was Miguel Almiron, he scored the only goal (watch below) as Paraguay beat Bulgaria 1-0 in a friendly.
You might have heard mention of his goalscoring struggles in club football…but Almiron made it two in three games for his country (after no goals in his first 22 international appearances), a very decent strike from outside the box, as the Bulgarian defence gave him time and space to shoot.
Next up was Matty Longstaff. After a whirlwind start to club football with his Newcastle debut in August and then Premier League debut (one of three starts for the midfielder in October) and first ever goal in the win over Man Utd, the 19 year old pulled on an England shirt for the first time yesterday.
Playing away against Portugal, England Under 20s were 4-0 up when Matty Longstaff was given the last 18 minutes off the bench, no further goals in that time.
Then for Ciaran Clark, he had last played for the Republic of Ireland 14 months ago, in a 4-1 defeat to Wales. Whilst the last squad he was called up for was as a non-playing sub in October 2018 as they drew 0-0 with Denmark.
With only five Premier League starts in the following 12 months, Clark found himself left out of the national squad.
However, after his excellent recent form for Newcastle and two goals in the last two games, the defender found himself starting once again for his country last night.
A mainly young experimental Irish team were the better team throughout but found themselves one behind on 30 minutes thanks to a very good goal from New Zealand.
However, Ireland bounced back to eventually win comfortably, with goals from Williams, Maguire and Robinson.
