Bizarre Mark Lawrenson comment on Newcastle United ahead of kick-off against Manchester City

Mark Lawrenson has been talking about today’s match.

Ahead of kick-off at St James Park, the former (for a very brief and failed period) Newcastle United defensive coach talking about the likely result between NUFC and Manchester City.

Like the rest of you, it is quite common for me to disagree with what Marl Lawrenson.

However, at least usually his reasoning makes some kind of sense.

Not this time.

Mark Lawrenson claiming: ‘Newcastle have done fine under Steve Bruce. Including the defeat at Aston Villa (on Monday night).’

Overall, it is fair to say/claim that NUFC have done ‘fine’ under Steve Bruce so far, at least in terms of points.

When it comes to performances it has been more a case of the good, the bad and the ugly, with Newcastle lucky to have as many as 15 points from 13 games, considering how little threat they have had in the vast majority of games.

To claim that the performance (definitely one of the ugly ones) at Aston Villa was in any way ‘fine’ is laughable, even Steve Bruce has said it was completely unacceptable.

His words suggest two things to me about Mark Lawrenson.

Like most pundits he is very lazy in terms of the effort he puts into his well paid job.

The other thing is that I reckon Lawrenson has simply looked at the scoreline on Monday night and thought 2-0 away at Villa doesn’t suggest a disaster. The reality of course is that Newcastle were absolutely second best and the match was over in 36 minutes when the second goal went in, only Martin Dubravka keeping the scoreline respectable, with the help of Villa wasting some absolute sitters.

Mark Lawrenson goes for a 2-0 away win today and Manchester City to ‘go all out’ at Newcastle to get the win to get the gap down to six points before Liverpool play. I agree with those comments and hopefully with Man City pressing, it may just give the likes of Saint-Maximin and Almiron some joy on the counter-attack, here’s hoping.

Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:

“Manchester City are chasing (Liverpool) now.

“Newcastle have done fine under Steve Bruce.

“Including the defeat at Aston Villa (on Monday night).

“But Manchester City need the points for the title race and I expect them to go all out to get them.

“Prediction is Newcastle 0 Manchester City 2.”
