Aston Villa fans comments on Newcastle United match – Getting the retaliation in first
Aston Villa fans have had plenty to say already, even though the Newcastle United match is still eight days away.
A case of friends reunited as the fanbases reconnect after a gap of 33 months.
The last meeting saw Newcastle and Rafa Benitez ease to a 2-0 victory over Villa and…Steve Bruce.
The Aston Villa fans absolutely slaughtered Steve Bruce when he was manager, forcing him out after a run of one win in nine Championship matches, one supporter even launching a cabbage at Bruce!
A remarkable transformation now sees a number of Aston Villa fans claiming that actually Steve Bruce isn’t that bad a manager. I’m not sure exactly what to think and whether they are just hoping to wind up Newcastle supporters with the comments?
They point to Newcastle/Bruce winning the last two games, whilst of course it was only two wins from the opening 11 games for NUFC under the head coach.
Villa looked to be doing ok with 11 points from their first eight Premier League games but after three defeats in a row, the fear for them is that becoming seven in a row if they don’t get a positive result against Newcastle, as they have Chelsea, Man Utd and Leicester up next.
The reality of course is that only six points separate Villa in fourth bottom and Sheffield United in fifth top, a win for either Newcastle or Aston Villa could be massive.
Aston Villa fans comment via their Villa Talk message board:
‘Monday Night Football live on Sky. What could go wrong.
Going to be a meltdown of epic proportions if we get done by Bruce.
Wonder if anyone smuggles some cabbage in just for pure banter.’
‘Newcastle will be without captain Jamaal Lascelles for up to three months after he suffered knee ligament damage in the 2-1 win over Bournemouth.
Shame for them, good for us.’
‘Big miss for them. He’s a promising young player. Let’s not forget that “Agent Clark” will probably start for them, which should help!’
‘Schar is also doubtful for the game against us.’
‘Great news for us, he’s a very good centre back.’
‘Has anyone got a ticket for the cabbage?’
‘Mr Bruce doesn’t require a ticket.’
‘Why are we so reliant on one player?
If he is injured, we need to find ways of coping without him but he’s not irreplaceable, no-one is.
Although, it was in The Championship last season, when Grealish was injured, Henri Lansbury stepped in and performed admirably.’
‘A loss would be an absolute disaster. Chelsea, Man Utd and Leicester are up next.
Lose to Newcastle and we certainly will be in the bottom 3 in Christmas.’
‘Jack will return and we will batter them about 5-0.
Bruce was always terrible against Smith from memory. Though, I guess they only actually had 2 or 3 games against each other.’
‘Have Newcastle got a striker who hasn’t scored for weeks?
I think we all know the script by now…’
‘Newcastle will have some confidence going into this, lets hope they lose there mojo during the international break!!’
‘They’ve got talent in the squad and Steve Bruce while uninspiring is not as bad as a lot like to think.
Very pacy forwards could really cause us some issues in transition when they break, I know we have good defenders, but Newcastle’s two wide forwards are lightening fast.
I’m guessing they will try and play as many direct long balls to play one of them in behind our final defensive line, for every one they receive, they’re a good chance to finish.’
‘I agree. For all the talk of how rubbish Bruce us (and I’m no fan) he’s actually got 6 more points than Rafa had at the same point last year.’
‘Must win game. There’s nothing more to say.’
‘Have to win. Just have to win.
Just have to.’
‘This will be 1-1. Typical scrappy Steve Bruce style game in which we’re 1-0 up and looking comfortable and then concede poor goal in last 10 minutes. Similar to how Burnley went.
Have to say I’m worried likes of Saint-Maxim and Almiron haven’t scored yet, we all know down the years we’ve been more than charitable to forwards with long goal droughts.
We need to have our first choice 11 to win as Newcastle are in best form of the season, 7 points from last 3 games.
Very dangerous fixture for many reasons.’
‘Have to win. 1-1 not good enough with the games coming after this one. We need some confidence and a draw against one of the weaker PL teams won’t do that.
We MUST get everyone fit for this, most importantly Jack Grealish. Newcastle are in good form and doing better than I expected but if we can’t beat sides like Newcastle at home I really think we’ll be going down which will be a disaster with all the investment we have made.
‘If Jack, Engels and Heaton are back we should win this.
Newcastle coming to VP and turning us over will send huge alarm bells ringing. Then again, they’ve done it to better teams.’
‘This international break has come at a good time for us. We have first team regulars, that need time to recover from their injuries and we haven’t got too much momentum to lose, having lost our last three league games.
The same can’t be said about our visitors, who have won their last two games and have taken 7 points from a possible 9, to lift themselves temporarily out of the bottom six.’
‘I think if we lose this we’re in for 7 losses on the bounce as i can’t see us getting anything against Man Utd, Chelsea and Leicester.’
‘Seeing as when Dean Smith was manager of Brentford when Bruce was manager of the Villa and how easily Brentford beat us or outplayed us every time, then all we need to do is play like Brentford and hope that the barcodes play like Villa…’
‘Well, we will see how the Dinosaur does.
I hope we stuff them 3-0…..but we will see.’
‘I think that Maximin guy will tear us apart just like Adama did.’
‘We’re at home and against Bruce so the atmosphere should be up there with the best. We need a big performance to put a stop to this losing run.’
‘For me Bruce was too cautious and Smith too open at times…..somewhere in the middle would be fine for me…we need to get the balance right.’
‘I reckon we could easily lose or draw this, not because we are bad, but i kind think Newcastle aren’t as bad as everyone seems to think they are.’
‘I really hate to give Steve Bruce any kind of credit but he seems to be doing a good job at Newcastle.’
