Aston Villa fans comments before AND after beating Newcastle United 2-0 – Well worth a read

It was eight and a half years since Aston Villa fans saw their team beat Newcastle United.

Since 10 April 2o11, it had been six Newcastle victories and six draws in the 12 (home and away) matches.

In that April 2011 defeat for Newcastle, the Magpies started the game with Nile Ranger spearheading the attack before Shefki Kuqi replaced him on 83 minutes.

Moving forward to last night, fair to say that Ranger and Kuqi would have threatened about as much as the current frontline. The attacking trio now having a combined 35 Premier League appearances and only one goal.

In their pre-match comments, Aston Villa fans had worries about Newcastle’s attacking threat.

Post-match it was a different story, with many of them talking about just how bad Newcastle had been, especially Almiron and Joelinton.

They maybe weren’t quite so surprised by how negative Steve Bruce’s tactics were, having seen him managing their own team.

Newcastle defending so deep in the first half and so little ambition shown, they gave the initiative to Villa and were suitably punished.

Aston Villa fans comment via their Villa Talk message board:

PRE-MATCH

‘Aston Villa 4-1 Newcastle

Steve Bruce gives a post match interview referencing the following:

No easy games in the big league, dust worselves down, roll wor sleeves up, we gave it our best shot, fans need to be realistic with their expectations, no point checking the table til the daffodils are sprouting etc…’

‘Steve Bruce is in the middle between Pulis and Warnock.

All play varying degrees of direct football.’

‘I do fear Maximin… he’s so quick and explosive. Need to find a way to nullify him.’

‘Whenever I’ve seen them play this season their front 3, wingers in particular have been quite a handful going forward but not so good when having to defend.

They are set up to have bodies behind the ball and then hit on the break with pace.

They way we play could really suit them if they score first. They are very good at parking the bus.

If we score first and they are forced to be more attacking I think we’ll win comfortably.’

Really hope we beat them.’

‘Maximin is same type as Adama, Targett might get bullied again. We should consider Taylor.’

‘I think we’ll have a lot of the ball, depends how well we use it. If we score early that will force them out and we might win by a few. If it’s 0-0 int the second half it’ll get pretty tense.’

Maximin 0 goals and 0 assists so far. Good time to play the Villa then.’

‘I think patience will be key this evening. Newcastle will play 5 at the back with 2 pretty defensive minded midfielders in front of them.

All in all it will be a tough game but one I expect us to dominate, just hope we score the goals.’

‘Think we’ll concede pretty early from a set piece, but after that’s it’s down to how we react.’

‘We have to win. 3 points tomorrow night would be vital considering how run of games and I’ll be completely honest, I really really don’t want Steve Bruce beating us.

Deano smacked him about every time in the Championship, let’s keep that going.’

You know Steve Bruce is going to get them fired up for this one.

Talk about how he was treated and maybe even the cabbage incident. Really need Villa Park rocking for this.’

‘No excuses now as Heaton and Jack are back fully fit.’

‘Come On Villa…a must-win and season-defining match if ever there was one!

Please, PLEASE Villa Brothers and Sisters make this one amazing atmosphere at the ground so I can hear you on the TV.’

POST-MATCH:

‘That’s why we were right to get rid of Bruce.

Absolute anti-football until they were were already two down.’

‘Grealish. Absolutely brilliant.’

‘Yes Villa you beautiful ba..ards.

Newcastle are going down on that showing.

Is Almiron actually a footballer?

Jack MOTM, it’s just frustrating that we make it hard for ourselves at times.’

‘Newcastle are appalling but it was a very good (if somewhat wasteful in the final 3rd) performance.

Vital win.’

‘Jack is back and so are we! Well done lads. Could have been a lot more comfortable but a clean sheet and end of a losing run. Well deserved. Smith got team selection right.

There’s no way we are finishing below this Newcastle team.’

‘If i’m Bruce I never want to see another Dean Smith managed team ever again.

Hate that we couldn’t kill off the game in the 2nd half. Loved pretty much everything else.’

‘Really good all round, shame we didn’t get another 5 in the 2nd half.’

‘Very good.

Wes though is a passenger.’

‘Disagree completely.

His off the ball stuff, movement etc was spot on tonight, occupied 2 defenders with ease giving space to other players.

Compare him to joelinton who was a non-entity, Luiz, konsa and mings aren’t too fussed by him they can play their game around him without breaking a sweat, the Newcastle defence can’t say the same.’

‘Very good win, happy with that. Nice to finally get a clean sheet and fantastic goal from hourihane followed up with another special set play.

Was very sloppy at times and that has cost us against the better teams but fortunately Newcastle are genuine garbage.

Almiron is one of the worst players I’ve ever seen.’

‘Only one MOTM match – Grealish was head and shoulders above anyone within 100 miles.’

‘First half we were brilliant, Newcastle sat back with two banks of four in a way that we have found hard to break down in recent years.

But with our patient build up play we always looked likely to score, the key to it having Grealish in and around the box playing passes and drawing fouls.

Hourihane did Hourihane things with two exceptional free kicks.’

‘Fantastic performance. Newcastle toothless but you can only beat what’s in front of you.

Could have easily scored more and apart from a 5 minute spell at start of 2nd half we were never under any pressure.

I can only put that down to the players being in shock that Bruce hadn’t instructed his players to retreat back into their half like they did for the first 45 minutes.’

I thought Bruce dropped a clanger when Carroll came on. I’d have brought Gayle on first for his pace and general roughability.’

‘Solid win. Newcastle were poor but we put in a 7/10 performance and got 3 points and a clean sheet.’

‘Lmao @ people who thought we would lose to this shower and end up losing 7 in a row.’

‘Newcastle were fortunate we didn’t stick 4 past them given Konsa and Wesley both missed after being unmarked 6 yards out.’

‘How fast is Miximikimin? He looked as he blitzed Guilbert at times and Guilbert is no slowpoke to be fair.’

‘I didn’t see him go past Guilbert at all, but yes he’s absolutely rapid. Just like Yedlin. Neither of them appear to be much better at football than Usain Bolt.’

‘We were ok. We will need to play better and cut out the sloppy passing against better sides.

Newcastle are awful, how the hell are they above us?! Almiron and Joelinton are shocking players.’

‘Knew it was ours when andy Carrol came on.’

‘He was so rubbish. So funny seeing Steve’s good old tactics of chasing a game by bringing on a unit and hoofing it forward. Totally nullified any threat they had!’

‘Looking forward to Steve Bruce saying they were unlucky or didn’t take their chances. Alternatively blaming the players.’
