Aston Villa fans comments ahead of kick-off v Newcastle – Heady mix of pre-match fear and confidence

It is eight and a half years since Aston Villa fans saw their team beat Newcastle United.

Since 10 April 2o11, it has been six Newcastle victories and six draws in the 12 (home and away) matches.

Here’s a bit of nostalgia for you, in that April 2011 defeat for Newcastle, the Magpies started the game with Nile Ranger spearheading the attack before Shefki Kuqi replaced him on 83 minutes. It is truly a total mystery how NUFC failed to win that day…

That was of course after Mike Ashley sold Andy Carroll mid-season for £35m and refused to allow any of the money to be spent on a replacement in January 2011.

In an ironic twist of fate, could Andy Carroll have some kind of positive impact on this one?

In their comments (see below) ahead of kick-off, it seems to be a real mixture, either totally convinced they are going to win comfortably, or fearing the worst.

Steve Bruce gets a fair few mentions and Allan Saint-Maximin is the player they fear the most.

Whilst so much of the hope of Aston Villa fans rests on the expected to return from injury, Jack Grealish.

Aston Villa fans comment via their Villa Talk message board:

‘Aston Villa 4-1 Newcastle

Grealish, Wesley, McGinn x 2

Dwight Gayle gets sent off.

Steve Bruce gives a post match interview referencing the following:

No easy games in the big league, dust worselves down, roll wor sleeves up, we gave it our best shot, fans need to be realistic with their expectations, no point checking the table til the daffodils are sprouting etc…

Deano complains that we didn’t take enough chances and should have scored 8.

If you could see to this happening, Villa, I’ll be most grateful.’

‘Steve Bruce is in the middle between Pulis and Warnock.

All play varying degrees of direct football.

SB isn’t as anti football as those two but given all the punts up to Hogan that shows he likes to get the ball up the pitch quickly than slowly building.

Pulis with no relegations, Bruce with two and Warnock with a relegation every time he was top flight manager.

Still I’m not going to be hurling abuse or cabbage at him, as I do think he’s a decent bloke who did try his best here, just disappointing how we approached that play off final which sums up his limitations as a manager imo.’

‘Should have more than enough to beat them. I’m predicting 3-1. Trezeguet, Hourihane, Wesley and Almiron all ok the scoresheet.’

‘Almiron hat-trick for me.’

‘I do fear Maximin… he’s so quick and explosive. Need to find a way to nullify him.’

‘Think we’ll win 2-1 or 3-1. Hate waiting for Monday night games though.’

‘Whenever I’ve seen them play this season their front 3, wingers in particular have been quite a handful going forward but not so good when having to defend.

They are set up to have bodies behind the ball and then hit on the break with pace.

They way we play could really suit them if they score first. They are very good at parking the bus.

If we score first and they are forced to be more attacking I think we’ll win comfortably.’

‘Any reason to why this game was picked as a Monday night game?’

‘Sky TV think people will want to watch it on TV. Also the OBVIOUS interest in Bruce’s new club vs his old one.’

‘Just looking at Newcastle results and they are actually having a very good season. They haven’t lost in 5 and out of the 5 games they have lost all season season 3 them were against teams from last seasons top 6 and another was Leicester.

This is going to be a lot harder than people think.’

‘I actually think Bruce would have had a good crack of getting us promoted had he not intentionally sabotaged our defence to prove a point.

Really hope we beat them.’

‘Maximin is same type as Adama, Targett might get bullied again. We should consider Taylor.’

‘I think we’ll have a lot of the ball, depends how well we use it. If we score early that will force them out and we might win by a few. If it’s 0-0 int the second half it’ll get pretty tense.

I think we’ll turn it on in this one, don’t know why.’

‘It’s quite possible that we’ll pick up no points from the 4 games after this. i’ve always said you cant have must win games before march, but….tonight’s a must win.’

‘Its crucial for the fans to make a racket tonight. Give bruce plenty of “bants”

Villa need to show we have a ruthless streak.’

Maximin 0 goals and 0 assists so far. Good time to play the Villa then.’

‘I think patience will be key this evening. Newcastle will play 5 at the back with 2 pretty defensive minded midfielders in front of them.

They will aim to invite us on and hit us on the break as they have massive pace. I hope Jack is back and fit enough to start but he should expect a tough night if he does play. I don’t see our wingers getting much room to run into so I’d go with intelligence over pace. Play Jack on the left and maybe Jota on the right (if fit). We are going to have a lot of the ball so it’s all about how we use it.

We will need runners to help Wesley as he will be up against 3 centre backs so a lot is expected of Jack, McGinn and Douglas (if he starts).

All in all it will be a tough game but one I expect us to dominate, just hope we score the goals.’

‘Think we’ll concede pretty early from a set piece, but after that’s it’s down to how we react.’

‘We have to win. 3 points tomorrow night would be vital considering how run of games and I’ll be completely honest, I really really don’t want Steve Bruce beating us.

Deano smacked him about every time in the Championship, let’s keep that going.’

You know Steve Bruce is going to get them fired up for this one.

Talk about how he was treated and maybe even the cabbage incident. Really need Villa Park rocking for this.’

‘No excuses now as Heaton and Jack are back fully fit.’

‘Come On Villa…a must-win and season-defining match if ever there was one!

Please, PLEASE Villa Brothers and Sisters make this one amazing atmosphere at the ground so I can hear you on the TV.’
