Aston Villa 2 Newcastle 0  – Monday 25 November 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle losing at Villa Park on Monday night.

GToon:

“Tonight we looked like a collection of average to poor players who hadn’t played together as a team before.

“Shelvey was ineffective and very very slow. Joelinton.

“Honestly words fail me with this bloke. He actually fails to do anything every game I see him and he has the composure of a centre half when he has the sight of goal.

“Almiron is no better. He moves quickly at times but generally has no idea what to do. Both of these two are looking very low on confidence and need a rest I reckon.

“Unfortunately the best team won. End of.”

Jamie Swan:

“The Blankety Blank, Blankety Blank reality check after two wins on the bounce.

“Second best, could have been worse. One goal down we might scrape a draw, two goals down without reply for this team and its goodnight Vienna.

“Another 3 points given to a bottom feeder and in poor fashion.

“Man City Home, Sheff Utd away next – not exactly counting any chickens or many points from those two.

“Southampton after that becomes a very big game.”

Steve Hickey:

“Going behind with our forwards isn’t recommended, 2 down makes it virtually impossible.

“Easily 2nd best first half, better after the break but the damage was done.

“Forward changes are needed and even if we spend well in January (if at all), it will be touch and go as to whether we stay up.

“May sound negative but that’s a marked improvement on what I thought after 5 games.

“We stay 14th but that can change very quickly in this league especially after this weekend.

“We will have to improve on set pieces for a start!”

David Punton:

“A setback.

“Recent progress checked as we made them look like Man City at times.

“They’ll dine out on this given there’s no love lost between Toon and Villa fans. They got the bragging rights tonight.

“The loss exposed the ongoing worry about the lack of goals from our very expensive front three. My word do lads need to find the net.

“It showed why Jonjo Shelvey is such a frustrating player to have.

“It showed why Yedlin isn’t always the best defensively.

“And it showed that despite all of the recent wins, there is always that concern over Steve Bruce’s tactical set up.

“A loss always heightens the sense of gloom but we can soak this one up.

“It’s the 3 games ahead that look a worry and we could be looking down the table instead of up it. Typical Newcastle.”

Paul Patterson:

“Back to the norm I’m afraid.

“One step forward, one back at best…”

Jamie Smith:

“Proper NUFC.

“A couple of decent performances then it’s back to the terrible sh..e we’re constantly capable of.

“The positive showings prior to the international break led to thoughts that the forward line might actually add goals to their game but Joelinton’s performance in particular seems only to have strengthened the calls for Gayle and/or Carroll to be given an opportunity soon.

“Still in with a good opportunity to bounce up the wide open table on Saturday though, if we can just deal with the small matter of Man City.

“Based on this shambles it could be horrible.”

Ben Cooper:

“Two first half Villa goals in 5 minutes settled a game which was fairly even until then.

“Both goals were bad goals to concede from set-pieces with both defence and goalkeeper at fault.

“After that United did very little to get back into the game and were well beaten in the end.

“A toothless 90 minutes and one to forget.”

Kieran Reynolds:

“A dispiriting and frustrating display where individual mistakes cost us badly.

“This was our worst performance since Leicester and Villa could have scored more.

“Saint-Maximin was our best player and did not deserve to be on the losing side.”

Nat Seaton:

“Shocking display made worse by the fact of being inside Villa Park!

“Was looking forward to the game, what a fool I am… same old Newcastle give you a little bit of hope then straight back down to earth.

“More worryingly is performances like this will see us well and truly in a relegation scrap.”
