Another big step for Florian Lejeune on Monday night, this time putting in 71 minutes
Florian Lejeune took his first big step towards first team football when playing 45 minutes last Monday (28 October) for the reserves, a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough’s second string.
Tonight he progressed further, playing 71 minutes before being subbed and replaced by Josh Scott.
Newcastle United Under 23s drawing 2-2 at the time.
Aston Villa’s second string had gone ahead on 23 minute before Luke Carman levelled on 40 minutes.
Only for Villa on the stroke of half-time to retake the lead.
Midway through the second-half Charman got his second equaliser of the night before Lejeune shortly after departed, presumably that being the planned time on the pitch beforehand.
Disappointment for the NUFC young players though as Michael Tait won it for the home side in the final minute.
Not having the greatest of seasons, tonight’s 3-2 defeat means that in all competitions the NUFC reserves have a record of four wins, one defeat and eight defeats.
The main thing though was that Florian Lejeune got through the night with no ill effects and that seems to be the case, another valuable bit of time on the pitch.
A small extra bonus was that tonight’s game was played at Villa Park, making the experience a bit more of an occasion for the Frenchman and indeed his younger teammates.
Steve Bruce has talked of Lejeune returning to first team availability sometime after this next international break and after playing at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, the next first team action is at Villa Park three weeks tonight (25 November).
In two days time it will be exactly seven months since the French defender picked up this latest serious injury, in the home defeat to Crystal Palace in early April.
