Alan Shearer reacts after Newcastle 2 Manchester City 2 and picks out 3 NUFC players for special applause
Alan Shearer was a happy man after the early kick-off at St James Park.
Twice Manchester City took the lead.
Twice Newcastle United fought back and equalised.
An ultra disciplined defensive five kept the visitors at bay.
Manchester City looking a little bit jaded and not able to create as many clear chances as they would have liked, despite the overwhelming 77% possession.
Newcastle of course rode their luck at times but arguably they were well worth the point.
Two superb goals from Willems and Shelvey delivering the draw.
Alan Shearer picked out three players for special applause.
The two goalscorers and Martin Dubravka who was excellent, a last minute quality save from Sterling protecting the point.
Ahead of the match Alan Shearer had explained what Newcastle needed to do…:
“Manchester City come to town on the back of a very very good performance and result against Chelsea after going one down early in the game.
“Showed great character and ability, playing some wonderful stuff.
“But Newcastle against them last season went 1-0 down early in the game but came back and won that game (2-1 in January).
“On the plus side for Newcastle: Aguero out injured, Laporte out injured, Champions League football for Manchester City (this midweek), early kick-off, so that’s the positive for Newcastle.
“Manchester City showed great character (v Chelsea) and belief in the way they came back, they know it will be a very tough game coming to Newcastle.
“Newcastle were very very poor I thought against Aston Villa on Monday, didn’t look like scoring anything, didn’t create anything.
“So they will have to improve vastly, if they are going to beat this Manchester City team.”
‘Do they (Newcastle) have that improvement in them?’
“Yes Newcastle do have that improvement in them.
“When you look at their performance at West Ham, their performance against Tottenham, they had a good result at home to Bournemouth after going behind.
“So they have it in them but it will be a very tough game against a very experienced and very good Manchester City side.”
‘Is it a bit of a free roll of the dice for Steve Bruce, as Newcastle are not expected to get anything?’
“There is no such thing as a free roll of the dice against any team.
“It will be a tough game but it will be a game that, if they play at their best, can get something out of it.”
