3 Positives and 3 Negatives from West Ham 2 Newcastle 3
Saturday finished West Ham 2 Newcastle 3.
Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark putting Newcastle two up inside 22 minutes.
Then Jonjo Shelvey making sure with a third goal on 51 minutes.
Newcastle going very defensive and a late two goal Hammers rally thankfully proving only minor consolation for the home side.
Ahead of each match we ask one of our writers to come up with 3 positives and 3 negatives following the game.
This time it is Michael Bennett:
He must have felt privileged.
Local lad made good, comes home and given the freedom of the London Stadium.
Took full advantage, strolling around and dictating play, involved in helping to set up the first two goals/
Struck the bar from 20 yards and scored the winner from 30 yards, not a lot more you can do!
Tactics from the kick-off
You couldn’t fault the tactics as Newcastle kicked off, the visitors clearly playing further up the pitch than at any time this season, certainly in away games.
West Ham low on confidence after no wins in five games (all competitions) and NUFC on top from the first whistle.
Great to see for once Steve Bruce letting his players pressure the opposition and that directly led to a deserved two goal lead inside 22 minutes, although if they had taken their chances it would have been four or five by the break.
A lot of good performances but I thought the Paraguayan was excellent.
Appeared to be given far more freedom to roam than at any point this season and took full advantage.
Popped up all over the attacking half as well as his usual defensive tracking back.If he had added a goal then he would have been a man of the match contender.
You welcome goals from anywhere but when you have a team that scores so few, the strikers need all the confidence they can get.
Winning the game is all that counts BUT it would have been a massive bonus if it had been Joelinton, ASM and Almiron getting one each.
We desperately need the attacking trio to start firing as we can’t rely on the likes of Fernandez and Clark scoring regularly.
Tactics to see out the win
As good as the tactics were in the first 50 or so minutes, getting the Hammers on the back foot as often as possible, I though the tactics seeing out the game in the final 40 minutes were so so bad.
To go so negative at 3-0 up didn’t make any sense as Newcastle were so much on top and West Ham demoralised.
By handing over control it enabled the home side to build what had seemed very unlikely pressure and find two goals as Bruce’s tactics invited them forward. On another day this could have proved fatal.
As has happened previously, Steve Bruce went over the top with his post-match comments.
Instead of just sticking to what a great result etc etc, the NUFC head coach tries to make far more out of it than he should. Getting more respect from fans, namechecking Rafa Benitez and so on.
He has to acknowledge that Newcastle went into the West Ham game with two wins from 11 games only one win from the last eight. Whilst it had taken NUFC 12 games for the team to score more than one goal in a match. A feeble two goals in the last 10 hours of football before beating West Ham.
This is hopefully a start of something better nothing more.
