Why would Gareth Southgate rather have empty space in squad rather than call up Newcastle star?

Last Thursday, Gareth Southgate named his latest squad.

The England boss naming a 25 man squad for the latest European Championship qualifiers.

The Three Lions set to play against the Czech Republic on 11 October and Bulgaria on 14 October.

That 25 man squad being:

Tammy Abraham (Chelsea), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ross Barkley (Chelsea), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City), Fabian Delph (Everton), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Tom Heaton (Aston Villa), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Michael Keane (Everton), James Maddison (Leicester City), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Declan Rice (West Ham United), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Fikayo Tomori (Chelsea), Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid), Callum Wilson (AFC Bournemouth), Harry Winks (Tottenham Hotspur)

Since the squad was announced, two players have dropped out.

Midfielder Fabian Delph and goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

The Aston Villa keeper replaced by Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson.

However,  The FA reported that ‘no further replacements are planned at this moment’ in relation to Fabian Delph pulling out.

Now I don’t normally get too agitated about England and who they do/don’t pick, or indeed take much interest in games other than when they get to the finals of the World Cup and Euros.

On this one though, I have to question Gareth Southgate.

Why leave a space in his squad when he could have called up the likes of Sean Longstaff?

If he was playing for Chelsea or Spurs I bet he would already have been called up.

Not saying he should be starting but why not give a lift to another young English player, especially when he’s at a club like Newcastle that doesn’t give you an automatic England call-up?
