Very interesting Chelsea fans comments before AND after beating Newcastle 1-0

Looking at these comments from Chelsea fans before and after the Newcastle match shows some interesting views.

Especially when it comes to seeing things a lot differently after the event.

Despite having a team scoring goals for fun and playing good football, Chelsea fans had a massive fear factor about today’s match.

Chelsea had won this fixture a massive 17 times in the Premier League era and Newcastle had only won once at Stamford Bridge in the PL, yet so many Chelsea fans were so worried ahead of today’s game.

They had big worries about their defence, having conceded 19 in all competitions ahead of Saturday.

Defending set-pieces was a massive worry for them and they feared what Joelinton and especially Andy Carroll would/could do to them.

Just read the comments post-match, when they now realise how negative Steve Bruce has the NUFC team playing and how little goal threat Newcastle carry.

Not a single shot on target on Kepa’s goal and not a single corner to defend, indeed Newcastle hardly got out of their half after the break once Chelsea stepped it up.

Comments from Chelsea fans via their Shed End and CFC Net message boards:

‘Worrisome. I foresee an Andy Carroll special. I reckon Newcastle can/will get two two to three goals through set pieces as they are a big side and specialise in that old fashioned English way of playing under Bruce.’

‘I am not saying Newcastle are fantastic and I expect us to score but the way we have been defending set pieces and with big units like Joelinton and Carroll running about, full prepped for us, I am not seeing a walk over nor a clean sheet.’

‘I expect Carroll will make an appearance, hopefully we are a couple of goals ahead when he does.’

‘I think we will win though might be close.

They beat Utd after going back to last season’s formation of 3CBs, might give them a bit of belief.

I wonder who will mark Carroll from set pieces?’

‘It seems that Newcastle have been a bit of a bogey team for us, since the 2010 season when they binned us 3-0 in the League Cup. followed by a couple draws then a string of losses up at their place too.

Andy Carroll will be a handful and they’ve just beat UTD so will be as confident as we are.’

‘They’ve always been a bit of a bogey team for us, and they did just beat Utd.. But then again it is Utd so probably doesnt mean anything. Hope to keep the good form rolling in.’

‘Living in the toon myself it’ll be a tough one to take if we don’t win this, but I reckon their big display was against United, they’re a dreadful team so if we have any sort of form we should be tonking them on home turf. Don’t fancy us to keep many clean sheets this season, but i’m going to make a bold prediction and say we’ll win this 4-0.’

‘Think they will 100% play Andy Carroll against our defence and hope to win as many frees and corners as possible.’

‘I don’t think this will be easy I can see Newcastle trying to frustrate us. They will most definitely try to make use of our defensive fragility by trying to score from set pieces.’

‘They have 14 days to prepare we have 2 days. obligatory carroll header. we need to score first and score fast otherwise we will be in big trouble.’

‘Full value for the win, would have been a catastrophe if Newcastle got a result, they did absolutely nothing going forward and despite playing defensively they still allowed about 5 clear chances, absolutely hopeless side.’

‘This team can be the best in Europe in 3 years time.’

‘Picking up three points with a clean sheet, whilst still breaking in the youngest team we ever had, do me all day long. Cant wait to add a few top world class players into this team next season.’

‘It was XG :2.30 Chelsea 0.20 Newcastle.’

‘First half didn’t get going vs toon’s 9 gadges behind the ball or Brucey ball, whatever one prefers.

2nd half was a different kettle of fish haven’t seen Chelsea play that fluidly in a long while all without some pretty important players out injured. Toon put up a brave fight but if not for Dubrovka it would been at least 3-0.’

‘Newcastle parked the bus and offered nothing going forward.

Yes a 1-0 game makes it look like the defended well. They did first half, not really the second.

Mount has to score that chance in the first half. All that space, low and hard, bread and butter chance.

On another day Pulisic adds to that, Tammy’s header hits the bar and in, and the defenders block sends Tammy’s shot just under the bar rather than over it.

At 4 or 5 it would not look such a good defensive display. They got lucky to get away with just a 1-0 loss.’

‘Pretty good performance, apart from the poor finishing. With the way Newcastle showed up, it’s likely to be a tight game unless we score early. They contained us well in the first half, and we looked lethargic and looked like a team came out of the International break.

Second half we lifted and should have wrapped up the game comfortably, the subs did a good job.

Defensively, we were only in trouble when the closed us down and forced errors in our final third, Zouma with the ball at feet poses more danger to the team than the opposition. I don’t think Kepa had a real save to make. I thought we managed their long ball game pretty well in the end, Caroll didn’t get a kick or head in.’

‘Good win ,deserved, difficult match with them defending deep.’

‘We were deserved winners, a very tough first half but second half we were excellent and controlled the game.

That was a great adjustment, not an easy fixture by any means when you put it into context. International break, so many injuries, Newcastle having more time to rest with less international players and coming off a win against United.’
